Title : Surg Tech

Location: 13 Weeks

Duration: Milwaukee Wisconsin

Shift: 8hr Day Shift (40)

Shift Information: Mon-Fri 0630-1500

Clinical Interviewing-Yes

On Call, Call Back Requirements: Weeknight, weekend and holiday call split evenly among the techs. Currently works out to about 7-8 days every 2 months.

Weekend Rotation: Saturday and Sunday covered by call crew (24 hours shifts)

Holiday Requirements: Holiday's covered by call crew. Usually 1 holiday per contract.

Floating Requirements: N/A

General Information:
  • Number of ORs: 14
  • Will you accept a traveler with 1-year experience:
  • RN: 2 years of OR experience
  • Surg Tech, Surg Assist, Anesthesia Tech: 2-3 years
  • Will you accept a first-time traveler: For all, yes, with 3 years of OR experience

Case Types:
  • Top 3: Ortho, GYN, General. 35% of cases are ortho
  • General (cholecystectomies, appendectomies), Bariatrics (robotic, laparoscopic), Ortho (total joints, sports medicine, ACDF, laminectomy, microdiscectomy), Plastics (breast reconstruction, total, biopsy), Urology (TURPs, cystoscopies), GYN (ruptured ectopic, total hysterectomy, D&C, hysteroscopy)
  • Robotics: DaVinci XI (experience required), Stryker Mako Robot (for total joints, mostly knees)
  • No Neuro, complicated spine, baby deliveries
  • Cases performed in a day: 20-23
Required License, National Certification, Certs:
  • RN: BLS required; ACLS and CNOR preferred
  • Surgical Tech: BLS, Graduate of accredited program required; CST preferred
  • Surgical Assist: BLS, CSA
  • Anesthesia Tech: BLS, Graduate of accredited FA program; ASATT preferred
Skills required:
  • EPIC experience required
  • RN:
  • Required - Circulate, DaVinci experience, GYN, ortho, General experience.
  • Scrub experience preferred
  • PACU Backup - recovery experience for the above patients
  • Surgical Tech:
  • Required – Scrub, GYN, ortho, General experience
  • Surgical Assist:
  • Required – First assist experience with ortho, robotics, retraction, suturing, scrubbing
  • Anesthesia Tech:
  • Required – difficult IV access, experienced with L&D, IR, and GI
Support on the Unit:
  • Charge RN
  • Shift 1: No patient assignment
  • Shift 2: Occasional assignment at the end of the day
  • Leadership
  • Leads: take patient assignments
  • OR Educator
  • Surgeons
  • Anesthesia Team
Technology/Equipment:
  • EMR: EPIC (required)
  • IV pumps: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis
  • Other equipment: iStat (Hemochron), C-arm is Client (staff not responsible for running machine, only setup).
Floating: If yes, where:
  • For RN, if low censused, could float to the inpatient units to do tasks or act as sitter. Will not take patient assignment
  • Optional: Float to St. Luke s South Shore, Graft, or West Allis
Orientation:
  • 3-5 days of orientation (8 hrs)
  • 1st Day – Meet with NM, Educator (CBLs, badge, login access, etc.). Remainder of shift with preceptor on unit.
  • 2nd – 5th days – orientation on unit with preceptor

  • Monday – Friday 0630-1500.
  • Will not flex before 0600
  • Based on surgical schedule
  • Call:
  • Based on unit needs
  • End of shift – 0630
  • Surgical Tech:
  • Weekend rotation: On call
  • Monday – Friday 0630-1500.
  • Will not flex before 0600
  • Based on surgical schedule

  • Monday – Friday based on unit needs
  • Weekend (Saturday or Sunday) – 0630-0630
