The Greater Manchester Region employs around 2,500 individuals. This area includes Manchester Memorial Hospital, a community facility with 249 beds, Rockville General, a 102-bed campus of Manchester Memorial Hospital, a large multispecialty provider group, and visiting nurse services. The Greater Manchester Region caters to approximately 300,000 residents across 19 towns.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The role involves assisting the surgeon during surgical and invasive procedures, ensuring that the operating room is properly prepared. Collaboration with the interdisciplinary team is essential, as is maintaining a safe and clean environment. This position reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.


Qualifications

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Completion of a nationally accredited Surgical Technology program is required, along with a Surgical Technologist Certification from a recognized national certifying body, such as The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (CST) or the National Center for Competency Testing (TS-C).

  • Candidates who have completed an accredited Surgical Technologist program but do not possess current certification must obtain it within 90 days of hire from a recognized national certifying body.

  • Surgical Technicians who have worked in the role of a Surgical Technician (Operating Room Technician) on or before October 1, 2023, may be eligible for grandfathering under CT Public Act 23-195.

  • Certification must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required upon hire or must be obtained during the introductory orientation period, with ongoing clinical competency maintained during employment.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Effective communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are essential.

  • Basic computer proficiency is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide comprehensive patient care in an environment that prioritizes safety and promotes positive outcomes.

  2. Adhere to the five (5) rights of medication administration to minimize errors, following Surgical Services policies for medication safety.

  3. Exhibit flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress, employing critical thinking and sound judgment in prioritization and delegation.

  4. Practice autonomously in alignment with evidence-based standards, pursuing personal and professional development while serving as a role model and mentor.

  5. Demonstrate understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan, providing age-appropriate care to patients.

  6. Effectively perform the scrub role during surgical and invasive procedures under the guidance of an RN.

  7. Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure efficient room turnover, including cleaning and preparing the space for subsequent procedures.

  8. Work with the RN to ensure proper identification, handling, and processing of specimens.

  9. Maintain aseptic technique throughout surgical procedures, identifying and addressing any breaches in technique with the surgical team.

  10. Communicate clearly and appropriately with the team leader, colleagues, and other healthcare team members.
