    The Surgical Technologist Student is enrolled in a surgical technology program that integrates classroom-based technical education with hands-on, work-based learning. This program is designed to prepare students for a career in surgical technology following graduation. As a member of the surgical team, the student supports the safe and effective performance of invasive surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. Responsibilities include collaborating with team members to maintain a safe operating room environment, ensuring proper functioning of instrumentation, and promoting conditions that maximize patient safety. Under supervision, the student may assist in the role of first or second scrub person or as a second circulator. Working under the direction of an experienced surgical technologist or registered nurse, the student performs tasks and services that contribute to patient care and comfort, in accordance with legal and institutional guidelines. Duties are limited to procedures for which the student has received formal instruction and demonstrated competency. This role requires the application of clinical knowledge, sound judgment, and initiative to support the surgical team and enhance patient outcomes.

    Responsibilities:

    Clinical Excellence

    Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the
    surgical procedure in their assigned specialty area.
    • Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs
    of the surgeon.
    • Participates in collaborative review of pertinent patient information for
    accuracy of procedure and associated factors influencing preparedness
    for procedure. (i.e. H&P, Consents, Radiographic reports).
    • Assists in circulating duties, obtains additional instruments, supplies, and
    equipment necessary while the surgical procedure is in progress.
    • Monitors conditions in the operating room and constantly assesses the
    needs of the patient and surgical team.
    • In the second assisting role, carries out technical tasks other than
    cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissue. This role is distinct from that of
    the first assistant and may, in some circumstances, be performed at the
    same time as the scrub role.
    • Strives to enhance personal technical and clinical competence in all jobrelated duties.

     

    Quality of Care

    Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care
    during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance
    of the sterile field.
    • Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of standard and transmission-based
    precautions.
    • Observes and promptly reports any unusual occurrences.
    • Organizes, cleans, and maintains unit work areas, supplies, and
    equipment.
    • Assists with inventory control by reporting needs.
    • Assists in room turnover by cleaning furniture and equipment according
    to established end of case cleaning guidelines.

     

    Training and Expectations

    In collaboration with a recognized academic program, commits to
    working for UnityPoint Health to grow clinical skills through hands on
    experience in the healthcare field under the direct guidance of an
    Educator, Surgical Technologist, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered
    Nurse.
    • Maintains good standing in all course work.
    • Follows all program policies and procedures set by the academic
    program and UnityPoint Health.
    • Maintains all eligibility requirements to participate for the duration of the
    program.

    Qualifications:
    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.  Enrolled in a current surgical technology program required.
    • License/Certification: Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification AHA – American Heart Association within 90 days of hire.
    • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:  Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the surgical team, ensuring proper coordination and patient safety. Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Understanding of surgical procedures and protocols, and ability to maintain a sterile field to prevent contamination. : Knowledge of preoperative and postoperative care, including patient positioning, draping, and dressing application. Customer/patient focused. Multi-cultural sensitivity.  Proficient in handling surgical instruments, operating room equipment, and performing surgical counts.  Ability to meticulously focus on every aspect of a task or procedure, ensuring accuracy and precision in every action.
