POSITION SUMMARY

The Surgical Scrub Technician assists surgeons and nursing staff in delivering high-quality patient care during surgical procedures in accordance with established clinical and safety standards.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Prepare the operating room by ensuring all required equipment and instruments are properly disinfected, assembled, and functioning correctly.

  • Assist surgeons and surgical staff during procedures by anticipating needs and passing sterile instruments, supplies, and sutures efficiently.

  • Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout all procedures and report any breaks in sterile technique immediately to the circulating nurse and surgeon.

  • Isolate and properly handle contaminated instruments and supplies to minimize the spread of infection.

  • Receive and prepare surgical specimens for laboratory processing.

  • Clean and restock operating rooms following each procedure.

  • Monitor and maintain inventory levels of surgical supplies.

  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing and physicians.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician training program required.

  • Current Surgical Technology certification required.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

  • Minimum of one year of operating room experience preferred.

  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • Membership in a surgical specialty society is encouraged.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

In accordance with ADA guidelines, this position may require:

  • Standing for extended periods of time

  • Stooping, grasping, lifting, talking, and hearing

  • Lifting up to 15 pounds regularly from floor to waist, 5 pounds from waist to shoulder, and 5 pounds overhead

  • Close visual acuity for detailed surgical tasks

Potential exposure to:

  • Bloodborne pathogens

  • Communicable diseases

  • Chemicals and steam

  • Pressurized cylinders

  • Sharp instruments

  • Moving equipment parts

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Team members are expected to complete required training during the initial 90-day orientation period. Training may include instruction on surgical technology, mechanical equipment, optical terminology, ocular diseases, and related clinical education.

Certification within the optometric or ophthalmic field is encouraged. Eligible employees may receive support through the Employee Career Development Program.
