Survey Crew Lead

Job Description

This Survey Crew Lead role is a great fit for someone who enjoys being out in the field while leading a team and driving projects forward. You'll oversee daily survey operations, supporting a variety of work including boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction stakeout surveys.

The position is centered around accurate, high-quality data collection, hands-on use of modern survey technology, and strong collaboration with office teams to keep projects running smoothly from start to finish.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a survey crew and guide day-to-day field operations across boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction stakeout surveys.
  • Utilize Trimble GPS equipment, robotic total stations, laser scanners, and TSC data collectors to capture accurate and reliable survey data.
  • Review and interpret engineering plans, plats, and legal descriptions to plan and execute surveys with precision.
  • Ensure field data is collected accurately, documented clearly, and organized for easy use by the broader project team.
  • Keep survey equipment in top shape and consistently follow all safety protocols in the field.
  • Partner closely with office staff, project managers, and engineers to support planning, design, and construction efforts.
  • Represent the company professionally on-site, building positive relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
  • Support land development projects by applying a solid understanding of local surveying standards and best practices.
  • Assist with construction stakeout work, including layout and verification of site features and improvements.
  • Foster a strong team environment through clear communication, proactive problem-solving, and support for fellow crew members.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of field experience in land surveying; prior crew leadership experience is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency with Trimble Access Field Software across GPS, total station, and scanning workflows.
  • Hands-on experience using Trimble GPS units, robotic total stations, laser scanners, and TSC data collectors.
  • Solid understanding of Maryland land development and surveying standards.
  • Proven experience with boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction stakeout surveys.
  • Strong knowledge of surveying practices related to land development and topographic work.
  • Ability to confidently interpret engineering plans, plats, and legal descriptions.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in a collaborative field-to-office environment.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Comfortable working outdoors and handling the physical demands of fieldwork in various conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with robotic survey instruments and construction stakeout processes is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with boundary survey software and ALTA survey standards.
  • Background in land development projects and related survey work.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or training field crew members.
  • Strong organizational skills, especially around managing field data and equipment.
  • Interest in growing your career within a supportive, team-focused environment.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with regular interaction and coordination with the office team. You'll enjoy a hands-on work environment paired with a tight-knit, collaborative team where your input is valued and visible.

Projects span from early design through construction, giving you the chance to build well-rounded experience and see your work come to life in the community. The team operates in a region with a steady pipeline of land development and infrastructure projects, offering both stability and room to grow-without the red tape you might find at larger firms.

Expect to spend plenty of time outdoors, staying active and working with industry-leading tools like Trimble GPS units, robotic total stations, laser scanners, and TSC data collectors. It's a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being in the field, leading a crew, and making a real impact on projects.
