Survey Instrument Operator

The Survey Instrument Operator will conduct a variety of surveying assignments and assist the Survey Party Chief in performing land surveys of roads, bridges, and building sites. The operator is responsible for establishing and re-establishing lines for construction stakeout surveys, easements, and property lines. Additionally, the operator will recover property corners and set traverse control points for boundary surveys, as well as set and mark stakes for construction stakeout projects. In the absence of the Survey Party Chief, the operator will direct the survey party. Responsibilities also include setting up and operating survey equipment such as data collectors, levels, and GPS, and performing all aspects of stakeout and location surveys using appropriate survey equipment.

• Carry out surveying assignments and assist the Survey Party Chief.
• Conduct land surveys of roads, bridges, and building sites.
• Establish and re-establish lines for construction stakeout surveys and property lines.
• Recover property corners and set traverse control points for boundary surveys.
• Set and mark stakes for construction stakeout projects.
• Direct the survey party in the absence of the Survey Party Chief.
• Set up and operate survey equipment including data collectors, levels, and GPS.
• Perform stakeout and location surveys using applicable survey equipment.

• Proficiency in surveying, GPS, and land survey techniques.
• Basic math competency and knowledge of survey computer programs.
• Understanding of drafting nomenclature, symbols, and surveying instruments.
• Knowledge of state law regarding property lines and surveying.
• Familiarity with job-site and traffic control safety rules.

• Ability to use a basic calculator and make accurate arithmetic computations.
• Ability to adjust and use survey equipment properly.
• Ability to conduct research and evaluate data.
• Ability to understand and interpret legal descriptions, engineering plans, maps, and field data.
• Ability to apply basic surveying principles to problem-solving.
• Ability to follow directions and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

The role requires willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout Virginia and surrounding states, with the expectation of working overtime as needed. Travel will include periods away from home during the week, with provided per diem and lodging.

This is a Permanent position based out of Glen Allen, VA.

The pay range for this position is $36920.00 - $41600.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
