Survey Party Chief
Location: Hillsborough, NJ (Field-Based / Onsite)

Compensation: $31.00 – $42.00/hour (Based on Experience)
Position Overview
A leading engineering and surveying firm is seeking an experienced Survey Party Chief to lead field survey operations for a variety of land surveying and construction layout projects throughout New Jersey.
The ideal candidate will have strong field surveying experience, the ability to manage survey crews, and hands-on expertise with boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction stakeout, and as-built surveys. This position requires a detail-oriented professional who can work independently in the field while coordinating effectively with project managers, engineers, and construction teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily field survey operations and supervise survey crews
- Perform boundary, topographic, construction stakeout, and as-built surveys
- Operate Total Stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, and electronic data collectors
- Establish, verify, and maintain survey control points and benchmarks
- Perform construction layout for roads, utilities, buildings, and site development projects
- Verify grades, elevations, alignments, and project control throughout construction activities
- Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and electronic survey records
- Review field data for accuracy and completeness
- Communicate project updates, field conditions, and challenges with office teams and project managers
- Train and mentor junior survey technicians
- Maintain survey equipment and ensure proper operation and calibration
- Coordinate field activities with engineering teams, contractors, and project stakeholders
- Support multiple projects while maintaining schedule and quality expectations
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum 5 years of professional field surveying experience
- Prior experience leading survey crews
- Strong knowledge of land surveying principles and field procedures
- Experience with boundary, topographic, construction stakeout, and as-built surveys
- Proficiency using Total Stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, and data collectors
- Ability to read and interpret survey plans, engineering drawings, and construction documents
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective communication skills
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field
- Experience working with consulting engineering or land surveying firms
- Background in municipal, transportation, utility, or land development projects
- Construction layout experience
- Experience mentoring junior survey staff
- New Jersey Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) License
- Experience supporting public infrastructure projects
