Job Title: Survey Rodman

Job Description

The Survey Rodman supports field survey and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) crews by performing physically demanding outdoor work, handling survey equipment, and assisting with data collection to ensure accurate, timely completion of projects. This role is ideal for an entry-level candidate who enjoys working outside, is eager to learn the surveying industry, and wants a stable, long-term career with opportunities for growth and overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Transmit survey data to the appropriate files in the computer network and acquire data for field use as directed.
  • Accurately and efficiently clear line, establish points, and perform taping, chaining, and leveling for field survey projects as assigned by the Crew Chief.
  • Maintain the crew's assigned vehicle in a clean and orderly condition, ensuring it is properly stocked with necessary equipment and supplies, and report any mechanical or safety-related issues to the Crew Chief.
  • Load, transport, clean, and store field surveying equipment used by the crew in a safe and organized manner.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with other crew members to support the timely and accurate completion of assigned projects.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and procedures, particularly when working around traffic, on active construction sites, or in other potentially hazardous environments.
  • Accurately identify various types of trees encountered while performing field survey work, as needed for project requirements.
  • Assist in training entry-level rodmen when requested, sharing knowledge of field procedures and safety practices.
  • Cut and clear brush and trees from the line of survey to ensure unobstructed access and visibility for survey operations.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including standing, walking, using hands and tools, reaching with arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and lifting or moving up to 50-75 pounds.
  • When supporting SUE work, perform heavy labor such as operating a jackhammer, digging, setting up the site, driving a company vehicle, and completing site clean-up.
  • Support accurate utility locating and related tasks when assigned to SUE or utility-focused projects.
  • Demonstrate reliability and motivation by consistently reporting to work on time, working full 10-hour days, and contributing to a positive team environment.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to perform sustained physical labor outdoors in Florida conditions, including heat, humidity, insects, and wildlife, for 10-hour workdays.
  • Capability to lift and move 50-75 pounds and perform frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and other physical activities required in field survey work.
  • Willingness to travel out of town during the week, including overnight stays from Monday through Thursday as needed.
  • Reliable work ethic with strong motivation to work hard, learn, and progress in the surveying field.
  • Aptitude to learn the survey industry, including the ability to understand and apply basic survey concepts and procedures.
  • Good basic math skills to support accurate measurement, calculation, and data recording in the field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with crew members and supervisors.
  • Comfort working in construction, land surveying, landscaping, or other manual labor environments.
  • Ability to learn surveying techniques and equipment operation under guidance from experienced crew members.
  • Experience working outside in Florida elements such as heat and variable weather conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Preferred experience in land surveying, construction, landscaping, masonry, concrete work, rod busting, utility locating, or other transferable trades.
  • Experience performing manual labor in outdoor environments, particularly in Florida.
  • Interest in advancing into roles such as instrument operator as skills and experience grow.
  • Comfort using tools and equipment such as jackhammers and other heavy labor tools when supporting SUE work.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to follow direction from a Crew Chief and more experienced survey professionals.
  • Desire for a long-term career in a specialized survey and SUE environment with opportunities for training and progression.
  • Ability to maintain organization and cleanliness of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Attention to safety and willingness to follow established safety procedures at all times.

Work Environment

This role operates in small field crews of 2-3 people based out of a local office, with work performed primarily outdoors in the extreme Florida elements. You report to the office at approximately 6:00 a.m., travel in the crew truck to the job site, and typically work until about 4:00-5:00 p.m., with overtime frequently available and paid at a premium rate. The work involves long days in heat, humidity, and exposure to insects and wildlife, as well as active construction sites and roadside environments, with plenty of breaks provided to manage the physical demands. Travel is a regular part of the job, including out-of-town work with potential overnight stays from Monday through Thursday; lodging and per diem are provided for these trips, which may extend up to a couple of hours from the home base and occasionally as far as Pensacola. The company focuses strictly on survey and SUE work and is run by experienced survey and SUE professionals, offering job stability, a significant backlog of work, and cutting-edge technology in the field. Once hired on a permanent basis, employees receive a competitive benefits package including healthcare and paid time off, as well as performance-based raises. The culture emphasizes a family-first approach, minimal bureaucracy, and treating employees as individuals rather than numbers, making this a strong career opportunity for an entry-level person who wants to grow with a family-owned, expanding organization opening offices across Florida.
