Job Title: Survey Technician

Job Description

This Survey Technician role supports an active as-built survey effort on a large data center project near Ann Arbor, Michigan. You will focus on field data collection, documentation, and reporting of installed utilities and site infrastructure using Trimble survey equipment and a project-specific local control grid (RGK). This position suits someone who is comfortable working independently in a heavy construction environment and who understands construction-phase and as-built survey workflows. The project is expected to last 9-12 months, with the potential for a direct, longer-term opportunity and advancement into a Crew Chief position upon successful performance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as-built survey data collection for underground and aboveground utilities, including water, sewer, storm, electrical, and communications systems.
  • Collect accurate field data using Trimble GPS, robotic total stations, and other survey instruments.
  • Work within the project-specific RGK coordinate/grid system to ensure alignment with design documents and BIM models.
  • Maintain detailed electronic field notes and keep survey data files organized and up to date.
  • Upload, organize, and transfer survey data for office processing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Support the preparation of as-built documentation and perform basic QA/QC checks on collected data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate daily priorities and work plans with survey leads, construction teams, and project management.
  • Identify and report discrepancies between design plans and installed field conditions in a timely manner.
  • Follow all site safety requirements and safe work practices while operating in a heavy construction environment.
  • Care for, maintain, and properly store assigned survey equipment to ensure reliability and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with team members and office staff to support project goals and contribute to continuous improvement of survey workflows.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of field surveying experience on construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Hands-on experience using Trimble GPS equipment for field data collection.
  • Hands-on experience using Leica and/or robotic total station equipment.
  • Familiarity with as-built survey workflows and construction documentation processes.
  • Ability to accurately collect, organize, and transfer field data in a consistent and reliable manner.
  • Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated commitment to data accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions on active construction sites.
  • Valid driver's license.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Understanding of RGK or other project-specific coordinate systems.
  • Experience working with design and BIM models in conjunction with survey data.
  • Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining effective communication with office and site teams.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing electronic field notes and data files.
  • Interest in learning and applying new survey technologies and workflows.
  • Desire to grow into roles with greater responsibility, such as Crew Chief.

Work Environment

This role is based on a large data center project in the Saline, Michigan area during a heavy construction phase. You will primarily work on site, with no work truck provided during the initial project assignment since all work is performed at the project location. The typical schedule is 50-60 hours per week, with an expectation of working approximately 10 hours per day and some Saturdays as needed to meet project deadlines. The work is outdoors in a construction environment, requiring comfort with varying weather conditions, active equipment, and coordination with multiple trades. The broader organization emphasizes a supportive, collaborative culture with accessible leadership, mentoring, and skill-building opportunities. It promotes work-life balance through flexible work practices where applicable, encourages staff to share ideas and contribute to innovation, and maintains a strong focus on leveraging technology to improve project delivery.
