Job Title: Survey Technician

Job Description

The Survey Technician supports a wide range of land surveying and construction projects by performing field surveys, operating surveying instruments, and maintaining accurate field records. This role requires strong awareness of safety and traffic control procedures, proficiency with modern surveying equipment, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented field environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety requirements and traffic control procedures for various surveying and construction operations to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Operate, handle, and perform basic field adjustments on surveying instruments, including transits, total stations, total electronic stations, data collectors, levels, compasses, tribrachs, and tripods.
  • Care for, clean, and properly store a variety of surveying tools and equipment, including field radios, to maintain equipment reliability and longevity.
  • Perform basic surveying tasks such as leveling, traversing, triangulation, trilateration, public land surveys, metes and bounds surveys, construction surveys, and photo control surveys under the supervision of a Party Chief.
  • Coordinate field work for a variety of standard survey types, ensuring tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with project requirements.
  • Collect and record survey data using total stations, GPS, and data collectors, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all measurements.
  • Prepare and maintain neat, orderly, and legible field notes for standard surveying operations, including leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, layout, as-built surveys, boundary surveys, and profile and cross-section surveys.
  • Assist with boundary, topographic, as-built, infrastructure, and other survey types as needed to support project delivery.
  • Set up and operate robotic total stations and related equipment for field survey work.
  • Work collaboratively with the survey crew and other team members, contributing to a positive and productive team environment.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality on job sites and at the office to support project schedules and team coordination.
  • Travel to various field locations throughout the state, meeting at the office or job sites as directed.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience in land surveying.
  • Hands-on experience with total stations and data collectors, including Leica and Carlson equipment.
  • Proficiency with robotic total station setup and operation.
  • Ability to perform data collection in the field using modern surveying instruments.
  • Knowledge of basic surveying principles such as leveling, traversing, triangulation, trilateration, public land surveys, metes and bounds surveys, construction surveys, and photo control surveys.
  • Experience performing boundary, topographic, as-built, infrastructure, and topographic surveys.
  • Familiarity with GPS use in surveying applications.
  • Ability to keep neat, organized, and accurate field notes for a variety of survey types.
  • Strong understanding of safety requirements and traffic control procedures for surveying and construction operations.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality on job sites and in the office.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and follow direction from a Party Chief or supervisor.
  • Demonstrated reliability and strong work ethic.

Work Environment

This role is with a small, approximately 40-person firm that operates in multiple markets, including municipal, state, federal, utility, education, commercial, residential, energy, and transportation projects. The company emphasizes a family-oriented culture where employee success, growth, and long-term careers are highly valued. The Survey Technician works primarily in the field, traveling throughout the state and often starting the day by reporting to the office and then heading out to job sites with the team in a company truck. Mileage reimbursement is available when using a personal vehicle if the job site is closer to home. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All surveyors receive access to a company vehicle for work-related travel. The organization invests in professional development, including reimbursement for surveying license classes, exam fees, and annual renewals. While on contract, employees earn paid time off and paid holidays. The work involves outdoor conditions in various weather, active fieldwork with surveying equipment, and collaboration with a tight-knit team across civil, field, and surveying groups.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rocky Hill, CT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00/hr.
