The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority was established in 2024 and is a public sector organisation with the powers and funding to improve transport, support housing delivery, boost skills, grow the economy and help the region transition to net zero. The Mayor also has responsibilities for Policing, Fire and Crime. By bringing together the strengths of our vibrant city and rural communities, the Combined Authority is making a long-term commitment to creating a stronger, safer and more prosperous future for York and North Yorkshire.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of how children, young people and families travel across York and North Yorkshire. Working with schools, local authorities and partners, you will lead initiatives that encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling, helping to improve health, reduce congestion and support our ambitions for a safer, more sustainable transport network.

You will play a key role in developing and delivering innovative programmes that inspire behaviour change, create lasting partnerships and support the Mayor's vision for active travel. Through your work, you will help create environments where active travel is the natural choice for everyday journeys and contribute to making York and North Yorkshire one of the best places in the country for people of all ages to walk, wheel and cycle.

What You Will Bring

We are looking for an enthusiastic and collaborative professional with a passion for active travel, sustainability and improving outcomes for children and young people.

You will bring:

  • Experience of developing and delivering programmes, projects or initiatives within schools, education, transport, public health or community settings.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with schools, local authorities, communities and partner organisations.
  • A proven ability to influence and inspire behaviour change through engagement, communication and partnership working.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver successful outcomes.
  • Confidence in presenting information, facilitating workshops and working with a wide range of audiences.
  • A commitment to inclusion, ensuring active travel opportunities are accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
  • A passion for creating healthier, safer and more sustainable communities through walking, wheeling and cycling.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of active travel programmes, School Streets, Modeshift, Bikeability or travel planning initiatives.
  • Experience of working with schools or educational settings.
  • Understanding of local government, transport, public health or environmental policy.

This role offers the opportunity to make a visible and lasting difference to the lives of children, families and communities across York and North Yorkshire.
