JOB SUMMARY: Provides instructional leadership to staff including: curriculum planning, review and implementation; and professional development. Responsible for day-to-day building administration and the safety and welfare of students, staff, and activities. Ensures a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere. Provides discipline as necessary and enforces school policy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)
- Interacts with students in a constructive manner to encourage each individual to perform at their highest level
- Manages a building staff
- Assigns teachers to classrooms
- Assist teachers with assigning students to classes
- Evaluates performance and effectiveness of programs and staff
- Coordinates in-service training for staff
- Maintains relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers and outside agencies
- Participates (as appropriate) in corporation-wide activities, in-services, and committees
- Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board, State and Federal level at the building level
- Appropriately report to staff and community during/after security situations (conveyed by the Superintendent)
- Prepare school budget
- Work with central office on budgeting/purchasing (Capital Projects)
- Works with Central Office personnel to prioritize the need for educational materials for students and staff with allowable anticipated funds
- Coordinate processes for the effective functioning of the school
- Maintains current educational/administrative License by completing required course work or professional growth points
- As Elementary School administrator, the principal shall carry out directives from the Superintendent and comply with all policies and administrative regulations adopted by the school board
- Shall assist teachers in the recommendations for retaining students
- Makes recommendations for retention and release of teachers for improvement of the school system
- Makes recommendations concerning the hiring of new staff
- Supervises and is responsible for development and implementation of curriculum content
- Shall provide for the most effective utilization of certified and support staff through appropriate assignment to a specific grade, subject, or position
- Shall promote an environment of harmony and cooperativeness whereby staff members can effectively work and obtain personal satisfaction in their jobs
- Responsible for management of the internal office staff and office operation
- Shall develop an effective rapport with the student body while maintaining pupil
order and discipline
- Shall be responsible for development and supervision of system for
assisting students with personal problems
- Where matters are of direct relationship to students, the principal shall
encourage student involvement in school organizations
- Shall work actively with parent-teacher organizations and other community groups dedicated to educational system improvement.
- Represents the school and/or district in a professional manner
- Maintains appropriate appearance
- Ensures own regular and prompt attendance
- Shall effectively complete regular and other job performance criteria as assigned
- Promotes good public relations for the school district and community
- Works with and helps bus drivers discipline and monitor students
- Works as a school safety specialist (which reports to the superintendent)
- Shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout employment in the Corporation
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages employees in the elementary school. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the elementary school.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the corporations policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Masters Degree, minimum of five years teaching experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Teaching Certificate/ Valid Indiana Administrator License with an elementary school endorsement / Corporation School Safety Specialist
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from peers, staff, parents, and the general public.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
