Position overview

Monitor and coordinate data system operations, including security procedures and communication with end users. Ensure system backups are performed and that backup storage and rotation are maintained. Monitor and record system performance and capacity, arrange vendor services or reconfiguration, and anticipate system expansion needs. Assist managers with State data security compliance. Coordinate software development, user training, network management, and minor equipment installation and repair.

Required qualifications Education

• Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information systems, business, or another related technical discipline.
• A bachelor's degree in one of these disciplines equals 1 year of specialized experience and 2 years of general experience.
• An additional year of specialized experience may be substituted for the required education.

General experience

5 years of experience in a computer-related field.

Specialized experience

4 year of experience administering multiuser, shared-processor systems and data communications networks.

Duties and responsibilities

• Grant and disable employee access in UNIX/Linux security files and databases.
• Troubleshoot UNIX/Linux system and hardware problems, including on-call remote support and/or on-site support.
• Install and remove UNIX/Linux equipment and hardware.
• Analyze UNIX/Linux system problems and performance and recommend solutions.
• Maintain the system scheduler, CRON.
• Develop and maintain scripts to automate manual processes.
• Install and configure Power Term and dumb terminals.
• Monitor system performance.
• Coordinate with customers and technical staff to schedule preventive and emergency maintenance.
• Serve as task leader for projects assigned by the TO Manager.
• Update software and hardware configurations for Unisys SVR4, HP-UNIX, Linux Enterprise Server, or minicomputers.
• Document software and hardware configuration changes.
• Use Maximo Service Desk to record and track changes or fixes to the UNIX/Linux environment.
• Provide guidance and instruction for future system hardware and software allocations.
• Update MTA's UNIX/Linux servers to meet MDOT and State standards.
• Apply hardware, database, and system patches to keep systems current.
• Perform backups.
• Provide monthly status reports summarizing activities, completed tasks, and work items.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by MDOT MTA management.
