Job Summary
The lead mechanical system engineering NSSS technical supervisor for functional groups of NSSS systems, provides technical interpretations of design requirements as they apply to the maintenance and operation of NSSS systems. Provides engineering recommendations and alternatives for solving operational problems involving system and component performance. Also serves as the primary plant contact or expert for assigned NSSS systems. Develops solutions and engineering options to support safe, reliable and efficient system operation. Develops and performs tests to demonstrate that design requirements and specifications are met for modified systems. Performs work which involves conventional systems engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of system precedents and performance as well as an extensive knowledge of principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. This knowledge and expertise required for this level of work result from progressive experience.
As a fully competent system engineer in all conventional experience aspects, conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard problem solving techniques and the application of system procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Required sufficient professional experience to ensure competence as a fully trained worker.
Technically supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of a small staff of system engineers and technicians, estimates personnel needs and schedules and assigns work to meet completion dates.
The incumbent will not be responsible for the supervisory administrative duties of performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, selections, leave approval, promotions and pay changes.
Supervision Received
Supervision and guidance relate largely to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters. Consults with NSSS systems manager concerning unusual problems and developments.
Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)
Demonstrated working knowledge in technical areas achieved as a senior engineer and as described on performance appraisal.
Demonstrated Supervisory Skills: leadership, problem identification and options/solution development and finalization, decision making, workload planning, budget development and maintenance.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills: give clear direction, negotiation skills, ability to confront difficult and adverse situations.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and interface with higher levels of management.
Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)
The minimum requirements below meet or exceed ANSI/ANS 3.1-2014 standards.
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or other related engineering degree from an accredited curriculum, plus appropriate continuing education.
Experience: Must have at least 2 years of related experience and 1 year of nuclear power plant experience.
Certificates/Licenses: Licensed Professional Engineer desirable. Membership in professional and technical societies is desirable.
Other Requirements: Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable. Must be able and willing to assume "on-call" rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability. Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by TVAN procedures during peak periods. Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location.
