Title: System Software Engineer II

Position Summary
Our client, a global leader in advanced autonomous and robotic solutions across multiple industries, is seeking a System Software Engineer II to develop and maintain the foundational software that powers advanced robotic and autonomous systems. This role bridges embedded firmware and higher-level robot software, with a strong focus on Rust, Linux, and Yocto-based systems, as well as the deployment and management of software across an active robotic fleet. The ideal candidate has experience developing system-level software for deployed robots or embedded platforms, understands how to manage and update systems in the field, and is comfortable working directly with hardware to validate software in real-world environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain system-level software using Rust, C, C++, and Python.
- Maintain and evolve Linux-based operating systems, including Yocto, and associated system-level tools.
- Develop lower-level abstractions that bridge embedded firmware and higher-level robot applications.
- Support the deployment and lifecycle management of software across deployed robotic systems and fleets.
- Develop and support OTA update mechanisms, remote system management, deployment processes, and fleet management capabilities.
- Build tools that improve fleet observability, system stability, performance, and scalability.
- Debug complex, multi-threaded issues across firmware, operating system, perception, and application layers.
- Collaborate closely with firmware, perception, and application engineers on shared platform software.
- Validate software changes directly on robotic hardware and support field deployments and troubleshooting.
- Evaluate and adopt new technologies as the robotic platform and fleet scale.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience developing production software in a compiled language such as Rust, C++, C, Go, or Java.
- Strong experience developing and maintaining Linux-based systems in production environments.
- Experience building and maintaining large, complex software systems.
- Experience with deployed robotic, embedded, or connected systems, including software deployment, updates, or remote system management.
- Experience debugging complex, multi-threaded, multi-disciplinary software systems.
- Ability to work across system software, firmware, and higher-level application layers.
- Comfortable working hands-on with robotic or embedded hardware to verify software functionality.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications- Professional experience with Yocto / embedded Linux OS development.
- Experience developing software for robotics or autonomous systems, including ROS or comparable robotic platforms.
- Experience supporting OTA updates, remote system management, fleet deployment, or software lifecycle management for deployed robotic or embedded systems.
- Strong production experience with Rust.
- Experience with embedded systems, hardware abstraction layers, CAN-based communications, or real-time/edge computing.
- Experience supporting cloud-connected robotic systems, telemetry, fleet observability, or large-scale deployments.
- Exposure to AI technology is a big plus!
