Job Summary
The Systems Administrator is responsible for server management and maintenance of the day-to-day activities supporting departmental systems and software. This role is responsible for administering and managing multiple data systems. This position is responsible for patching, updating, and upgrading these systems. This role includes knowledge of documentation, virtual environments, application-level protocols, security, and support and administration of network and server operating systems. The Systems Administrator is responsible for assisting computer support assistants and students with software and hardware provided in laboratories and oversees computer lab personnel.
Core Responsibilities
- Provides advanced support and training to faculty, staff, and students on hardware and software use.
- Assists faculty, staff, and students with software and hardware selection, configuration, and usage training.
- In coordination with University Technology Solutions (UTS), provides system administrator (sysadmin) support for departmental Windows and Linux servers, including installation, updating, and maintenance of Linux systems and software, and departmental software license server support. Light scripting as needed.
- Supports departmental systems and application configurations, including workstations, servers, NAS, RAID systems, and instrument controllers.
- Supports research workstations and instrument controllers, including COMSOL server updates and configuration, and support for other research-specific software environments.
- Provides lifecycle support for departmental classroom/lab workstation and office computers across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Provides audio/visual support for labs, classrooms, and conference room technologies.
- Supports networked and direct attached printer/copier, including troubleshooting firewall and switch configurations, LAN IP addresses, and connectivity issues for departmental systems.
- Maintains workstations and servers through software updates, driver updates, security configuration updates, and hardware upgrades.
- Uses a customer service-focused approach to troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.
- Serves as departmental liaison as Information Security Associate for cybersecurity response and as Information Technology Associate to University Technology Solutions.
- Conducts annual inventory activities and maintains inventory records as required.
- Manages and maintains the departmental server rooms and performs other duties defined by the departments.
- Support for virtualization and containerization.
- Support in data storage and management generated at the core facility, Kleberg Advanced Microscopy Center.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, Vocational Training or Apprenticeship in a related field.
- Five (5) years of related work experience.
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in STEM and four years of experience in systems administration and/or coordination.
- Working knowledge and practical skill in IP filter-based Firewall configurations for Windows Server and Linux.
- Working knowledge of using fixed IPv4 address assignments by MAC

Working Conditions
Office environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events. Workdays, areas, and work hours may vary depending on the departments needs.
Physical Demands
Sedentary work: sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary; walking and standing are required only occasionally. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in confined spaces with or without reasonable accommodation.
This position will work primarily on main campus, with occasional work on the downtown campus. Must be flexible to work on either campus as needed. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
