Senior Engineer — Core Services

 

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own and evolve Sammons Financial Group's Core Services platform — a collection of Java Spring Boot microservices and REST APIs that serve as the standardized interface to the Enterprise Information Hub (EIH). You'll design, build, and steward domain-driven data access APIs (Party, Policy, Activity, Arrangement, Accounts, Pending Business) and data persistence services, ensuring scalability, reliability, security, and operational excellence across all environments. You'll provide technical leadership on complex, cross-domain initiatives, setting patterns that are adopted across teams.

Responsibilities:

Technical Skills

 

  • Java & Spring Boot: Deep experience building production microservices with Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security, and Spring MVC; strong understanding of REST API design (OpenAPI/Swagger), pagination, filtering, and error handling.
  • Kubernetes & Containers: Hands-on experience deploying and operating containerized services in Kubernetes (AKS preferred); familiarity with Helm charts, KEDA auto-scaling, health probes, namespace strategies, and pod lifecycle management.
  • API Gateway & Security: Experience with Azure API Management (APIM), OAuth 2.0/JWT authentication (Okta), subscription-based rate limiting, row-level security patterns, and secrets management (HashiCorp Vault).
  • CI/CD & Automation: Azure DevOps pipelines for build, test, and deployment; environment promotion strategies (DEV TEST STAGE PROD); automated testing gates (unit, integration, contract, load).
  • Data & Persistence: Strong familiarity with Snowflake (Hybrid Tables, Dynamic Tables, views, RBAC) and/or SQL; understanding of data storage patterns, schema evolution, and data service design for read and write operations.
  • Performance & Reliability: API SLO management (latency p95 < 500ms, 99.9% availability), caching strategies, connection pooling, circuit breakers, retry/backoff patterns, and DR/BCP planning.
  • Observability: Application-level monitoring, structured logging, distributed tracing; usage and cost telemetry; alerting and SLO dashboards.
  • Security: Encryption at rest/in transit (TLS 1.3), tokenization, network policies, private endpoints, secret rotation, SSO/MFA, and audit logging.

 

Domain & Industry

  • Insurance (preferably life & annuity) background is a plus, including understanding of producer/agent models, policy lifecycle, and regulatory considerations.
Qualifications:
  • College Degree in the field of computer science, information science, management information systems Preferred
  • Minimum 8 years' IT development experience or equivalent Preferred
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills and the ability to communicate with business partners and other IT staff
  • Problem solving skills sufficient to perform research and recommend a proposed solution to problems
  • Able to work on multiple tasks and meet established deadlines
  • Able to effectively direct and coordinate the work of other team members on a project without having HR management responsibility for them
  • Knowledge of computer programming languages as required for the system

Pay Range: USD $84,721.00 - USD $176,501.00 /Yr. Pay Transparency Verbiage: Range includes data points from multiple labor markets. Specific range is dependent on the labor market where the incumbent will be hired to perform the position. Starting salary is dependent on candidate qualifications and experience.
