Reports to: Senior Manager, Engineering & NPI
Position Location: Company HQ in Suburban Philadelphia, PA
The Systems Engineer (SE) will lead the development and verification of the next generation of SLIM based ion mobility instruments coupled with LC-MS, with a strong emphasis on electronics test development, precision electrical measurements, and instrumentation engineering. This multi-disciplinary role requires deep hands-on expertise in electronics test systems, electromechanical design, schematic interpretation, Python-based data analysis, and the generation of rigorous technical verification documentation. The Systems Engineer will drive requirements collection from business & technical teams and ensure those requirements are validated at each stage of the product development process through formal test and verification activities. The systems engineer will follow the product development lifecycle and operate within the Quality Management Systems' policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards and practices.
Responsibilities:
• Facilitate requirement collection from business and technical teams; derive, manage, and drive review of product, system, and subsystem requirements across functional groups.
• Derive, manage, and drive the review of product, system and subsystem requirements across functional groups, with particular attention to electromechanical interfaces and instrumentation signal paths.
• Responsible for system concept and architecture diagram, with a focus on electronics test architecture, instrumentation signal chains, and electromechanical interfaces.
• Participate in design reviews for all subsystem components, providing electronics test and verification perspective; read and interpret electrical schematics and PCB layouts to guide test strategy.
• Design, develop, and execute electronics test systems and automated test equipment for instrument subsystems, including precision electrical measurements (voltage, current, impedance, frequency response, noise) using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, LCR meters, and data acquisition systems.
• Develop Python-based data analysis pipelines (NumPy, pandas, SciPy, Matplotlib) to process, visualize, and statistically evaluate test measurement data; apply signal processing and uncertainty quantification techniques to validate instrument performance against specifications.
• Author and own technical verification reports, test reports, and qualification documentation that formally demonstrate requirements closure at the system and subsystem level, with full traceability between test results, requirements, and design artifacts.
• Apply a fundamental understanding of electromechanical systems — including sensors, actuators, motion control, and signal conditioning — to support instrumentation development and identify design-for-test (DFT) improvements.
• Adhere to MOBILion's QMS policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards and practices; responsible for product FMEA, safety analysis, and change control as they relate to test and verification activities.
• Provide technical documentation for stage gate reviews.
• Lead external safety and environmental regulatory certifications; support product lifecycle activities including sustaining engineering and manufacturing test improvements.
• Work with manufacturing and service personnel to improve quality, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability of products through test-informed design feedback.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• At least 3 years' experience in electronics test development, including design and execution of electrical measurement and verification test systems for complex instrumentation.
• Proficiency in Python for data analysis and measurement data processing, including NumPy, pandas, SciPy, and Matplotlib/Plotly; demonstrated ability to apply statistical analysis and signal processing techniques to evaluate instrument performance.
• Demonstrated ability to author formal technical verification reports and test documentation that close requirements with full traceability in a structured product development environment.
• Strong understanding of product development in an ISO9001 environment.
• Fundamental understanding of electromechanical systems and instrumentation design, including sensors, transducers, signal conditioning, and data acquisition hardware.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory test equipment: oscilloscopes, spectrum/network analyzers, multimeters, DAQ systems, function generators, and programmable power supplies.
• Experience with complex products involving integrated mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems; strong written and oral communication skills with ability to translate test data into clear engineering conclusions.
• The ability to lead the product development from lab prototype to commercial launch.
• Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
• An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline
• Experience with mass spectrometry, ion mobility, or other analytical instrumentation development
• Familiarity with automated test frameworks (e.g., LabVIEW, PyVISA, pytest) and instrument communication protocols (GPIB, USB-TMC, LAN/SCPI)
• Familiarity with IEC 61010 electrical safety certification processes
• Successful work-related experience in leading cross-functional engineering teams through stage-gate product development processes
• Strong project management skills; proficient in Python and at least one additional industry-standard language (e.g., MATLAB, C/C++).
