Job Summary
The T-Combined Cycle Instrumentation & Control Lead - Electrical is a hands-on, working lead position responsible for leading and performing the operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and associated instrumentation, controls, communications, data processing, and computerized control systems at a combined cycle generating station. This position serves as the technical authority for CEMS and I&C systems, ensures compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, and provides day-to-day leadership while actively participating in field work to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation. The Lead serves as the senior operational authority on shift and sets the standard by example for compliance, professional conduct, and a high standard of performance, while encouraging others to do the same through daily direction of work.
What you will do
Standardization and enforce Power Production Operating Practices (PPOPs), ensuring consistent interpretation, application, and adherence across all operating crews.
Lead Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) execution and governance, ensuring LOTO boundaries are accurate, standardized, and aligned with approved procedures to protect personnel and equipment during maintenance and outage activities.
Oversee Maximo work management execution for Operations, including work request validation, operational readiness reviews, job planning coordination, and accurate completion documentation to support maintenance and reliability programs.
Responsible for contributing technical knowledge and field coordination to support small plant projects from planning through completion.
Provide leadership and direction for all CEMS, instrumentation, and control system activities, including, but not limited to, installation, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, report preparation, and recordkeeping.
Plan, assign, and oversee daily work activities of I&C technicians and other assigned personnel, ensuring work is performed safely and in accordance with established procedures, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
Lead electrical and electronic troubleshooting, repair, inspection, and construction activities for plant instrumentation, controls, and electrical systems, including work on voltages more than 600 volts.
Oversee installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of communication systems, data processing equipment, computerized control equipment, control panels, relays, instrumentation wiring, and associated piping.
Maintain and provide technical oversight for solid-state devices, computers, PLCs, telemetering equipment, protection relays, switchboard instruments, and control systems.
Interpret and apply construction prints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and instruction manuals; ensure drawings and documentation are kept accurate and up to date.
Monitor equipment performance, direct diagnostic efforts, and ensure accurate collection, interpretation, logging, and retention of operational and environmental data.
Coordinate and oversee contractor work to ensure proper installation, testing, and operation of equipment.
Collaborate with other departments to support operational goals and customer satisfaction.
Ensure completion, accuracy, and timely submittal of required State and Federal environmental reports, maintaining records in compliance with regulatory standards.
Ensure all work complies with environmental, regulatory, and company policies, standards, and permits.
Promote and enforce safe work practices by observing safety rules, correcting unsafe conditions or behaviors, and modeling the Alliant Energy "Live Safety. Everyone. Always." philosophy.
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, maintenance practices, plant reliability, and equipment performance.
Ensure proper housekeeping, cleanup, and equipment preservation activities are completed throughout the plant and shop areas.
Oversee the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of communication, instrumentation, and computerized control systems, including PLCs, relays, switchboards, control panels, and associated wiring and devices.
May be required to support work at other Alliant Energy combined cycle facilities as operational needs dictate.
Perform other duties that are similar, related, or incidental to the position.
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED | Required
Required Experience
4 years of experience as an Instrument & Control Technician and/or equivalent in an electric generating, manufacturing and/or processing/production facility.
Preferred Experience
Prior experience providing technical leadership or directing the work of others is strongly preferred.
Other Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of instrumentation, control systems, and CEMS operations in a power generation environment.
Strong working knowledge of digital control platforms such as Emerson, Ovation, GE Mark V, and Allen Bradley PLCs. (preferred)
Demonstrated leadership ability, including directing work, assisting and training others, and coordinating team activities.
Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electrical, electronic, and control system issues using test and analysis equipment.
Thorough understanding of environmental regulations, reporting requirements, and compliance obligations related to CEMS.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, drawings, and technical specifications.
High degree of mechanical and electrical aptitude.
Excellent documentation, recordkeeping, and attention to detail.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate and prevent potential future issues.
Proficiency with computer applications and plant systems.
Ability to remain calm, decisive, and focused during abnormal or high-pressure situations.
Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and pride in work.
Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
