A tack truck operator is responsible for safely operating and maintaining the asphalt distributor. The driver will also perform other duties on the paving crew as needed.  Valid Class B CDL license is required with Tanker & HazMat Endorsement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITION:

  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
  • Follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Follow direction of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite.
  • Operate the tack truck and other equipment in a safe manner.
  • Must have the ability to work with the asphalt crew to pave roadways per plan specifications and, if need be, to perform tasks of other positions as instructed by crew foreman to ensure daily schedules/estimates are met (when tack truck is not in use).
  • Performs pre and post trip daily vehicle inspections routinely and follows up on any issues related to the vehicle with appropriate personnel.
  • Load tack truck oil from tank.
  • Fill asphalt and burner tanks, clean and setting spray bars, and clean excess asphalt out of tanks.
  • Understand and follow directions from supervisors as to required work area and emulsion distribution rates.
  • Before heating the oil, ensure that all valves are in the off position, and the oil completely covers the heating pipes, and truck controls are set for proper circulation and ventilation.
  • Constantly monitor temperature, heat oil with confines of recommended temperature.
  • Spray oil in designated areas before paving operations begin.
  • Attendance required according to Company Attendance Policy to ensure crew can operate at normal efficiency level.
  • Attitude/cooperation: always maintaining courteous and professional manner with co-workers, customers and public.
  • Must be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes
  • Overtime work required. Out of town or county work may be required
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary
  • Must adhere to PPE (personal protective equipment) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by company
  • Physical ability to operate equipment under temperature extremes and for extended hours of time. Normal shift is 8-12 hours
  • Requires riding to and from job sites and must meet Driver Qualification Standard.
  • Ability to follow Traffic Control Crew instructions and practice safety standards per Company Safety Policy requirements.
  • Assumes additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Valid Class B CDL license is required with Tanker & HazMat Endorsement.
  • Must have 2-3 years’ experience as Truck Driver in the construction industry and previous Tack truck operator experience
  • Must have the ability to handle several projects at once, while maintaining tight deadlines.
  • Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must always wear proper attire including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image.
  • Project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with supervisors, co-workers, customers, and the public.
  • Must be able to provide proper documentation that you have the legal right to work in the United States.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to withstand physical demands associated with heavy highway construction
  • Must be able to adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures
  • The following motions will be required: stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting - these will occupy most of workday
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs. for repetitious lifting while using proper lifting techniques
  • Work environments will vary making it necessary to tolerate weather conditions, such as rain and extreme temperatures. Employees may be exposed to dust, dirt, varying temperatures, loud noises, etc.
