Tailman — Civil Infrastructure

We specialize in public works, water resources (including water and wastewater treatment plants), and site development, with expertise in underground utilities, roadway construction, and related civil infrastructure.

We are seeking a motivated Tailman to join our underground utility construction team. In this role, you'll support pipe installation operations while developing the knowledge and skills needed to advance into a Pipelayer position and beyond.

What You'll Do

Pipe Crew Support

  • Assist the Pipelayer with honing pipe, checking grade, and rigging pipe for installation.
  • Support pipe layout, alignment, and joint assembly.
  • Assist with trench operations while maintaining safe work practices.
  • Help maintain production by ensuring materials and tools are readily available.

Learn the Trade

  • Participate in Petticoat-Schmitt's training and development programs.
  • Learn proper underground utility installation methods, materials, and safety practices.
  • Develop the skills necessary to advance into a Pipelayer role.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work closely with the Pipelayer, Excavator Operator, and Foreman to maintain efficient production.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
  • Take pride in producing quality work that meets Petticoat-Schmitt standards.

What We're Looking For

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of experience on an underground utility pipe crew required.
  • Experience supporting the installation of water, sewer, or storm utility systems.
  • Basic understanding of rigging, trench work, grade checking, and safe utility installation practices.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in trenches up to 20–30 feet below grade.
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely work around heavy construction equipment.

Work Schedule

  • Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
  • 40-hour workweek; overtime as required.
  • Occasional Saturdays depending on project needs.
