Job Title: Tax Compliance / Audit Specialist
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Duration: 4+ months

Notes:
Position is on-site Monday through Friday, 7.5 hour days
Position is for a 4-month duration, 7/1 through 10/31/2026
Interviews will require in-person attendance

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, representatives, and internal agencies.
  • Conduct research and analysis to resolve complex tax issues, payment discrepancies, and filing compliance matters.
  • Review tax returns, financial statements, and supporting documentation to determine accuracy and compliance.
  • Perform audits, investigations, and compliance reviews related to tax liabilities, non-filers, underreported taxes, and special refund claims.
  • Analyze accounting records, financial data, and audit findings to identify discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain case files, assessments, collection activities, and compliance documentation.
  • Handle confidential taxpayer information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepare reports, evidence, and documentation for investigations, administrative actions, and legal proceedings.
  • Serve as the lead investigator on assigned cases and provide testimony during hearings or court proceedings when required.

Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in Accounting, Tax Compliance, Tax Collection, Auditing, Finance, Revenue Operations, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of State and Federal tax laws, regulations, compliance requirements, and enforcement procedures.
  • Experience conducting audits, investigations, compliance reviews, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in reviewing tax returns, financial statements, accounting records, and audit documentation.
  • Experience using tax administration systems, databases, and case management tools.
  • Strong analytical, research, problem-solving, and investigative skills.
  • Ability to interpret complex tax regulations and apply them to real-world situations.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills with the ability to resolve sensitive tax matters professionally.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with ethics requirements.
  • Prior experience testifying in hearings, legal proceedings, or administrative reviews is a plus.
Required skills:
  • Eight (8) years of experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, or customer service Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules and regulations applying to each of the several types of taxes.
  • Specialized knowledge of the computer systems and tracking systems, especially DOR software and database application.
  • Proficiency in accounting principles and auditing practices used in various industries.
  • Familiarity with taxpayer accounting and auditing systems.
  • Experience using tracking and database systems to manage assessments and collections.
  • Ability to systematically review financial documents and identify discrepancies or abnormal trends. Required Tactful and responsive communication with taxpayers and their representatives
  • Understanding and applying confidentiality laws and ethics when handling sensitive taxpayer information.
  • Strong organizational and critical thinking skills.
