Tax Manager — Marin County, CA (Hybrid, 3 days on-site)
About the Opportunity
My client is a well-established, full-service CPA firm with deep roots in Marin County, built on a philosophy of quality over volume and long-term client relationships. This is a genuine partner-track opportunity at a firm with real staying power and a diverse, loyal client base spanning real estate, technology, nonprofits, government entities, and closely held businesses — not a high-volume compliance mill.
The Role
We're looking for a Tax Manager with 8+ years of public accounting experience who's ready to lead engagements end-to-end, develop junior talent, and become a trusted advisor to clients rather than just a return-preparer. This is a hands-on leadership role with a clear runway to partnership for the right person.
What You'll Do
- Prepare and review Individual, Corporate, Partnership, Estate, and Trust tax returns
- Lead client relationships — tax and financial planning, complex research, and proactive advisory work, not just reactive compliance
- Supervise, mentor, and develop junior and senior staff
- Own client account management, including scoping, timelines, and communication
What You Bring
- 8+ years of public accounting experience
- Active CPA or EA license
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- A track record of managing people, not just returns
- Strong client-facing communication and relationship-building skills
- Comfort managing multiple complex engagements simultaneously
Compensation & Benefits
- 5–15% performance-based bonus
- Full medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance — the firm covers the first $950/month toward health and dental premiums
- 401(k) with a 3% safe-harbor contribution plus up to 2% additional profit sharing after one year
- 48 hours of sick time annually, negotiable vacation
- Hybrid schedule: 3 days on-site, 2 remote
- A real, defined tax season (roughly one month at 60–75 hours) — offset by Fridays off through July
Why This Role
- Clear, structured path to partnership — not a vague promise
- Small enough that you have direct partner access and real influence; established enough to offer stability and a deep client base
- Culture built around quality over volume and long-tenured staff, not constant turnover
- Genuine work-life balance outside of a well-defined, time-limited busy season
You should be proficient in:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Enrolled Agent (EA)
- Tax Preparation
- Public accounting
