Hurricane Helene Expanded Recovery Assistance Caseworker

The Hurricane Helene Expanded Recovery Assistance (ERA) Caseworker reports to the ERA Supervisor and is responsible for delivery of all client service activities in the ERA program. The Caseworker is responsible for excellent casework service delivery and prioritizing services to the most vulnerable households. The Caseworker will coordinate closely with the Hurricane Helene Long-Term Recovery Operation, National Headquarters volunteers and employees, as well as partner agencies providing Disaster Case Management and social services to the impacted areas.

This is a work from home, hybrid position with the caseworker preferably living within 25 miles of one of the following areas impacted by Hurricane Helene in the state of Tennessee: Washington, Carter, Unicoi, Johnson, Greene, Cocke Counties. Frequent travel in the areas impacted by the hurricane for meetings and other activities will be required. This is a full-time temporary position working 40 hours a week expected to last 6 to 9 months with the opportunity to extend based on business need. This position is not eligible for benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and support the development and implementation of strategies, tools, plans, processes, and procedures within the Expanded Recovery Assistance program.
  • Receive referrals from partner agencies and direct registrations from impacted clients. Interview client and family to understand recovery plan and ongoing recovery needs, provide accurate and appropriate casework documentation.
  • Provide assistance to households by obtaining appropriate documentation required for eligibility in the Expanded Recovery Assistance program. Coordinate with social service agencies and Disaster Case Management providers to confirm eligibility criteria.
  • Advocate on behalf of client to help obtain available additional resources to meet client's needs.
  • Maintain accurate service records and statistics, assist with generating reports in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) to internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience with social services or service/program delivery, or equivalent combination of education and related experience required. Knowledge of disaster recovery processes, community resources, and support services. Ability to relate well and effectively with diverse groups and individuals. Compassion and a genuine desire to help individuals and families facing challenges and adversity. Patience and resilience to handle emotionally demanding situations and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to manage difficult or emotional client situations appropriately. Respond to requests for service and develop alternative solutions as needed. Individuals must be customer oriented, organized, and focused on solutions. Exhibit sound and accurate judgment. Work with integrity and ethics and maintain confidentiality. Intermediate level proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Willingness and aptitude to learn new systems. Ability to assess client needs and provide services equitably and consistently. Spanish proficiency strongly desired.
  • Travel: Travel required. Must have a current, valid driver's license.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic). The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
