What is the Caminos program?

You would be helping children who have recently migrated to the United States and are seeking opportunities for reunification with family as well as the chance to pursue their education and legal immigration cases. BCC calls this our Caminos program, and we see it as a fulfillment of our purpose as a non-profit: to enrich communities, one family at a time.

What is the Board of Child Care?

Board of Child Care (BCC) is not a federal or state agency. It is an independent not-for-profit organization that serves over 1,000 children annually across 12 locations.  You would join about 800 teammates across DC, MD, PA, and WV that empower youth and their families to flourish within their community.

What does this job do specifically?

The Teacher Assistant is a hands-on position that works with an instructional team consisting of a special education/general education teacher and other support staff assigned to the classroom or students. This individual provides instructional and behavioral support for the children in a designated classroom using research-based strategies under the day-to-day supervision of the special education or general education teacher. The Teacher Assistant will also assist the teacher with preparation and reinforcing of classroom instruction. This position may also deliver evidence-based programs designed for support staff under the direction of a teacher.

Essential Functions:

• Demonstrate familiarity with cultural patterns existing within a community that may affect the behavior of children and adolescents.
• Work effectively as a member of a team.
• Establish relationships with children and adolescents on a group and individual basis, gaining their trust and confidence.
• Accept supervision from the Teacher.
• Physically intervene and restrain male students, as necessary.
• Able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
• Able to work cooperatively with others.
• Establish and maintain a safe classroom environment by implementing behavior management techniques together with the Teacher.
• Assist with the planning of the curriculum and, in consultation with the Teacher, implement specific parts of the curriculum.
• Substitute teach in the classroom in the absence of the Teacher.
• Assist the Teacher in writing and maintaining required records.
• Assure that administrative and/or department directives are enforced.
• Perform other duties, as requested.
• Follow regulations and protocols outlined by the Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR).

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or a related field.
• Must be fluent in speaking Spanish and English.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Minimum of two years of experience in education, clinical mental health, or related field.
