Position: Teacher (Elementary AIG)
Terms of Contract: 10 months, part-time, benefit non-eligible
Location: Iron Station Elementary School
Reports To: Principal
Monthly Salary: Teacher State Salary Schedule (plus local supplement)
FLSA: EXEMPT
Qualifications/Requirements: Must hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina teaching license in the appropriate licensure area. AIG license (Area 88087) preferred.
Goal: To provide a rigorous and challenging educational environment that meets the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted and high-potential learners. The teacher will foster critical thinking, creativity, and complex problem-solving skills across disciplines, ensuring that each student is identified accurately and supported through differentiated instructional strategies.
Duties:
- Coordinate the universal screening process for all 2nd-grade students to ensure equitable identification across all populations.
- Facilitate the referral and identification process for students in other grades using multiple pathways, including achievement data, aptitude scores, and performance tasks.
- Lead the school-based AIG Team to review student data and make formal placement decisions.
- Implement higher order thinking curriculum to foster high-level thinking in early elementary classrooms.
- Provide specialized instruction through pull-out or cluster-grouping models focusing on advanced literacy, mathematical reasoning, and inquiry-based learning.
- Address the unique social and emotional needs of gifted learners, including specific support for perfectionism and underachievement.
- Collaborate with regular classroom teachers by providing resources and "push-in" support to help differentiate core curriculum for high-potential students.
- Maintain accurate AIG folders for all identified students to ensure organizational consistency.
- Develop and update Differentiated Education Plans (DEPs) annually to remain in full compliance.
- Serve as the primary liaison for families, hosting annual meetings to explain identification results, service options, and student growth.
- Gather and submit all required district and state reports in a timely and efficient manner.
- Collaborate with AIG specialists across the district to share best practices, align instructional strategies, and ensure a cohesive gifted education program.
- Implement and uphold the local AIG plan by ensuring all school-based practices align with district goals and state standards.
- Communicate and encourage participation in enrichment opportunities, competitions, and specialized programs available to gifted and high-potential students
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of forces frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
- Other duties as assigned
