Reports to: Director of Special Services / School Principal
Supervises: N/A
Job Goals: To plan, instruct, and organize instructional environments which help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. Employee may coordinate and direct the activities of regular education and exceptional children teacher as it relates to deaf and hard of hearing students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide instruction and/or support to DHH students in the development and maintenance of skills specified in the student's IEP Review available medical/audiological information pertaining to the student's performance and probable use of hearing; obtaining updated medical/audiological information and share with parent, teacher, and other appropriate staff Conduct initial and on-going assessments designed for DHH students; assist in screening and selecting students for enrollment in DHH services Provide assistance and support for adaptation of classroom/materials to teachers that may occur as a direct result of hearing impairment Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, teacher, staff, parents, and other related agencies Provide in-service training to students and staff regarding hearing loss and its implications along with the use of amplification equipment and assistive technology Assist in identifying, developing and implementing appropriate use of resources for instructional application specifically for the DHH population Monitor the condition and use of appropriate amplification equipment for each student Demonstrate skills necessary to communicate effectively and to provide a complete English model for hearing impaired students using a Total Communication approach
2021 Buncombe County Schools Job Description | page 2 of 2 Make regular contact with parents of students and keep records of contacts, including completion of progress monitoring Develop lesson plans for implementing instruction Provide emotional support for students and families to promote understanding and coping skills for students' hearing loss Develop transition plans to support targeted career, vocational, and life skills Work as a member of a transdisciplinary team for planning, assessing, and developing appropriate Individual Education Programs Maintain accurate records and files, and prepare documents and reports Demonstrate an understanding, patient, respectful and receptive attitude toward exceptional needs students of varied age groups Be flexible and receptive to change Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures; report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources Attend in-service trainings, conferences and meetings as needed
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months, 8 hours a day/215 days
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
