Job Overview
The role of the Teacher-Mentor is the high calling to sacrificially serve the next generation of our city through executing the complete model of Elevate Indianapolis by investing outside the school day, life-on-life year-round mentoring, and virtually year-around and in-person mentoring on site. This role does not require a teaching license and directly supports WIOA outcomes through serving Elevate Affiliate students in Level 3 school partners.
The specific workflow of your position depends on the season, specific concentrations, experience level, class load assignments, and administrative responsibilities (including professional development, team leadership, and planning). Elevate Indianapolis strives to introduce students to new experiences through Mentoring, Pathways to Purpose, Service Learning, and Sports and Adventure.
Teacher-Mentors work with Elevate Indianapolis to serve the organization’s mission to build long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth, equipping them to thrive and contribute to their community. This role, the first year is specifically focused on Affiliate students in 7 determined high schools on college and career mentoring, while inviting into the full Elevate model. Elevate Indianapolis is looking for a few strong youth advocates, including the ability to serve our English language learning students.
Initially, this position will have a caseload of upper-class high school students and alumni as identified for the following schools: Crispus Attucks High School, Ben Davis High School, Decatur Central High School, Franklin Central High School, Indiana School for the Deaf, Indianapolis Met, and Warren Central High School.

Specific Responsibilities
General Teacher-Mentor Responsibilities:
- Administration — Keeps records and reports as necessary. Administration is accurate, consistently turned in on time, and contains minimal errors.
- Attendance — Participates, is attentive, and is present on time to meetings, classes, and activities.
- Bonding — Establishes, builds and sustains mentoring relationships with students in caseload to produce positive, holistic life-change in urban youth.
- Modeling — Serves as a positive role model and leader for Elevate Indianapolis students to demonstrate outstanding ethics, organizational values, character qualities, and behavior.
- Representation — Represents Elevate Indianapolis in a professional manner in the classroom, during site visits, at community collaborations, and at community functions.
- Professional Development — Participates in and is attentive with learning opportunities as assigned or pursued.
- Fiscal Management — Ensures that funds are used properly and for the allocated purposes according to policy.
- Programming — Develops and implements programming that promotes the overall mission of Elevate Indianapolis according to the Elevate USA model.
- Dashboard — Provides accurate weekly inputs to the Thriving Youth Dashboard Salesforce app, aligned with SMART goal objectives as identified by organizational leadership. Maintains and reports on metrics for the pipeline as required.
- Flexibility — Fulfills other responsibilities as assigned with a respectful, team attitude.
- Community Collaboration — Embraces our holistic mission as executed through vetted out, proven partnerships with community organizations. Engages volunteers from area businesses and community organizations to invest in our students towards their holistic development according to the Elevate USA model.
Specific Position Responsibilities:
- Holistic Mentoring — Serves a caseload primarily comprised of students.
- Provide Affiliate Level 3 Virtual/Phone Intake and Academic Check-In services for WIOA participating students.
- Deliver Virtual Career Coaching Sessions focused on college and career readiness.
- Administer Agilities Work Profiler assessments to support career exploration and planning.
- Develop and maintain Digital Individual College & Career Plans.
- Support the creation and management of College and Career Portfolios.
- Provide Certification Access and Support to assist students in earning industry-recognized credentials.
- Cultivate relationships with and coordinate communication among Elevate staff and High School Administration. Attend meetings with the school to represent Elevate as assigned, reporting to WIOA Manager and team lead.
- Supporting the establishment of staff culture—model and encourage communication, professional dress, planning and execution of engaging lessons, and development of relationships with and participation in activities with students and staff.
- Attend Huddle meetings at least weekly at an established time with teammates and plan sessions.
- Coordinate and deliver the virtual leadership series to strengthen leadership development, and provide virtual financial literacy education and resources, along with inviting to in-person mentoring events and activities as scheduled by the Elevate program directors.
- Offer resource and referral services to connect students with supportive programs and opportunities.
- Deliver Affiliate Level 3 College and Career Mentoring Supportive Services to address barriers to participation and success.
- Collaborate with Leadership 220, Leadership Laces, and Skilled US to expand virtual learning, leadership development, and workforce readiness opportunities.
- Support student engagement, career pathway exploration, and postsecondary planning through integrated virtual and community-based programming.
- Facilitate Simulated Work-Based Learning experiences to build career skills.
- Conduct Virtual Career Literacy Workshops covering workforce readiness topics.
- Provide Community-Based WIOA services through inviting students into Elevate OST programming and skill-building opportunities during summer, spring, and fall breaks.
- Ensure year-round access to virtual services for WIOA participating students.
Essential Job Qualifications
Preferred Competencies
- Strategic program leadership with metrics and impact tracking strength
- 5+ years of experience in youth development, workforce development, or education
- Experience with career, college, or technical education providers
- Familiarity with family and alumni engagement organizations
- Experience working with underserved youth populations
- Bachelor’s degree in education, workforce development, or related field
- Travel/Overnight Experiences- Willingness to attend professional development and student programming that might be overnight and out of state as required.
