Position Details

Job Title: Teacher, Music Education- Director of Bands (Grades 6-12)

Reports to: Building Principal

Summary:

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Director of Bands to join our team and create a stimulating, high-achieving music environment for students in grades 6-12. This role is responsible for directing all aspects of the middle school and high school instrumental music programs, including concert bands, 6th-grade beginner bands, and the High School Marching Band. The ideal candidate will develop engaging instructional plans, foster a lifelong love and appreciation of music, direct performances, and promote the academic, social, emotional, and artistic growth of all students.

Education and Experience:

• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or university required.
• Applicant must be Highly Qualified with the applicable Michigan Teaching Certificate endorsement in Music Education (or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable timeframe).
• Prior experience directing middle/high school band ensembles and marching band (preferred).
• Strong understanding of instrumental pedagogy, music theory, marching band drill design/rehearsal techniques, and curriculum development.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to create a positive, disciplined, and inclusive learning environment for all music students.
• Commitment to student success, community engagement, and professional growth.

• The ability to collaboratively create and execute clear, logical instructional plans and rehearsals that produce strong results in student learning and musical performance;
• The capacity to rigorously create and sustain a well-orchestrated system of ongoing performance assessment and feedback to inform a continuously responsive and adaptive system of music instruction attentive to students' specific learning needs..

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans, rehearsals, and instructional materials that facilitate active musical learning for band ensembles in grades 6-12.
• Direct, organize, and manage the High School Marching Band, including summer band camp, athletic event performances, parades, competitions, and community events.
• Select appropriate, high-quality repertoire for concert bands, marching band, and small ensembles tailored to student developmental levels.
• Instruct and monitor students in the proper use, care, and maintenance of musical instruments, band uniforms, music literature, and instructional equipment.
• Use relevant technology to support, differentiate, and enhance music instruction (e.g., tuner/metronome apps, accompaniment software, notation/drill software).
• Provide appropriate, timely feedback on musical performance and coursework.
• Manage administrative duties related to the band program, including inventory, music library maintenance, instrument repair, field trips, and budget management.
• Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
• Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress, performance schedules, and program needs.
• Observe and evaluate student performance and musical development through regular assessments and performances.
• Assign and grade class work, performance tests, assignments, and practice logs.
• Perform any additional duties as assigned
• Maintain a consistent and reliable on-site work schedule, including required evening and weekend commitments for performances, rehearsals, and competitions.

Talk, hear (in both quiet environments and high-decibel/noisy rehearsals or outdoor settings), taste, and smell as necessary for communication and safety. Regularly lift, carry, and/or move music equipment and instruments up to 40 pounds. Have specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust/focus.

Traditional classroom/rehearsal room environment as well as outdoor conditions (marching band field, athletic stadium, parade routes) subject to varying weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly meets performance deadlines amidst a fast-paced environment with severe time constraints.

Additional Information:

• Compensation and Benefits: Competitive salary and benefits package.
• Schedule: 180 days per year, generally following the TRCS Academic Calendar. Includes non-working days during winter, spring, and summer breaks, as well as designated holidays. Position requires additional after-school, evening, weekend, and summer hours dedicated to band camp, rehearsals, concerts, athletic events, and competitions.
