    General Job Description

    Bernalillo Public Schools is seeking dedicated, reflective, and intellectually curious educators to serve as Online Program Teachers who are committed to academic excellence, meaningful relationships, and preparing students for college, career, and civic life.

    Online Program Teachers provide direct instruction, academic coaching, and personalized support to students enrolled in the district's virtual learning program. They ensure students remain actively engaged in learning through regular communication, progress monitoring, intervention, and collaboration with families and school staff. Online Program Teachers foster rigorous, student-centered virtual learning environments while maintaining high expectations for academic achievement, attendance, and student well-being.

    In addition to supporting students enrolled in the online program, Online Program Teachers supervise and support students assigned to long-term out-of-school suspension who continue their education through the district's virtual learning platform.

    Please note that this is an in-person position located at Bernalillo High School. While the teacher will work on-site, they will be responsible for monitoring and supporting students participating in online learning.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Deliver High-Quality Virtual Instruction

    • Deliver rigorous, standards-based instruction through district-approved virtual learning platforms.
    • Internalize and effectively implement district-adopted high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), maintaining alignment to grade-level standards while adapting instruction to meet diverse student needs.
    • Prepare intentionally for instruction by anticipating student misconceptions, planning supports, and incorporating opportunities for engagement and academic discourse.
    • Scaffold instruction for English Learners, students with disabilities, and students requiring additional academic or behavioral support while maintaining high expectations.
    • Integrate literacy, academic language development, critical thinking, and digital learning skills into daily instruction.
    • Maintain organized, accessible, and compliant virtual classrooms that support student success.
    • Reflect on instructional practices and student outcomes to continuously improve teaching effectiveness.

    Monitor Student Engagement and Academic Progress

    • Monitor student attendance, participation, assignment completion, and academic performance daily.
    • Utilize learning management systems (LMS), student information systems (SIS), and other district data tools to monitor engagement and identify students requiring intervention.
    • Grade assignments promptly and accurately to ensure students and families have timely information regarding academic progress.
    • Maintain accurate electronic records, attendance documentation, communication logs, grades, and progress reports.
    • Report grades consistently throughout grading periods to proactively identify and address academic concerns.
    • Proctor assessments and course activities to maintain academic integrity within the online learning environment.
    • Support students in navigating online platforms and successfully completing coursework.

    Build Relationships and Support Student Success

    • Establish positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with students and families.
    • Maintain consistent, two-way communication with students on at least a weekly basis.
    • Conduct individual weekly conferences with each assigned student to review attendance, academic progress, goal setting, and needed supports.
    • Hold regular virtual office hours and small-group intervention sessions.
    • Contact families promptly when students demonstrate academic, attendance, or engagement concerns, collaboratively developing plans for improvement.
    • Promote social-emotional well-being by creating an inclusive online learning community that fosters belonging, engagement, and student voice.
    • Encourage student self-advocacy, responsibility, and ownership of learning.

    Implement Student Intervention and Support Systems

    • Implement Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS) interventions for students demonstrating academic, behavioral, or attendance concerns.
    • Provide individualized intervention and academic coaching to students requiring additional support.
    • Collaborate with counselors, special education staff, intervention teams, and administrators to remove barriers to student success.
    • Analyze student data to identify learning trends and adjust instruction before escalating interventions.

    Collaborate with Families and Community Partners

    • Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding attendance, progress, expectations, and available supports.
    • Collaborate with school staff, counselors, special education teams, and administrators to coordinate comprehensive student support.
    • Communicate monthly with Tribal Education Directors to coordinate wraparound services and ensure students are connected with community resources.
    • Participate actively in professional learning communities, district initiatives, and collaborative planning.

    Supervise Long-Term Out-of-School Suspension Students

    • Provide direct supervision and academic support for students serving long-term out-of-school suspensions while they participate in the district's online learning program.
    • Monitor attendance, participation, engagement, and coursework completion for assigned students.
    • Serve as the primary school contact for students and families during the suspension period.
    • Support successful academic continuity while helping students remain connected to school expectations and available resources.

    Engage in Continuous Professional Growth

    • Reflect regularly on instructional practice and student outcomes.
    • Seek and implement feedback to strengthen virtual instructional practices.
    • Participate in ongoing professional learning related to online instruction, technology integration, student engagement, and district initiatives.
    • Contribute positively to school culture through collaboration, professionalism, and shared leadership.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    None.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Valid New Mexico PED Teaching License appropriate for assigned grade level and/or content area (or eligibility to obtain).
    • Ability to pass required employment verification and background checks.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience teaching in virtual, blended, or online learning environments.
    • Experience teaching middle and/or high school students.
    • Experience supporting English Learners and students with disabilities.
    • Experience implementing Multi-Layered Systems of Supports (MLSS).
    • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or Indigenous languages preferred.

    Physical Requirements

    Sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and other physical activities typical of a classroom and office environment. Position requires extended computer use and the ability to support both virtual and occasional in-person student supervision.

    Work Environment

    Primarily school-based with significant use of virtual learning technologies. Responsibilities include supporting students through online platforms, conducting virtual meetings, and providing occasional in-person supervision for students assigned to the online program, including students serving long-term out-of-school suspension. Occasional evening hours may be required for family engagement, professional learning, or district events.
