• Texas Education Code § 48.158 defines "classroom teacher as an educator who is employed by a school district and who, not less than an average of four hours each day, teaches in an academic instructional setting or a career and technology setting.

All salary ranges are adopted annually by the Board of Trustees. The District ensures salary placement for new hires will be based on verified years of experience according to the Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service. These ranges should not be used to project salary amounts for subsequent years.

EDUCATION:

Bachelors Degree

One-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

CERTIFICATION:

Valid Texas Teaching Certificate by the State Board for Educator Certification with endorsement in area of Deficient Vision

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

To serve visually impaired students in their home attendance area schools; to provide these students with adaptive materials and equipment.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide direct instruction and consultative services in the Expanded Core Curriculum for students with visual impairments based on assessment.

2. Interpret eye medical reports to assist families and staff in understanding the student's diagnosis and its impact on visual functioning.

3. Perform Functional Vision Evaluations and Learning Media Assessments on new referrals and at three-year re-evaluations when appropriate as determined by the ARD committee.

4. Provide adapted materials to the classroom teacher, including braille and /or other tactile materials, enlarged print, and audio formats.

5. Plan and provide direct and consultative services to students with visual impairments consistent with the goals and service time contained in the student' IEP.

6. Assist in determining and procuring classroom equipment such as low vision devices, and assistive technology.

7. Maintain accurate student records.

8. Seek and participate in professional development opportunities to improve instructional effectiveness and stay abreast of new developments in the profession in order to increase student improvement.

9. Demonstrate proficient levels of technology applications, including assistive technology specifically for students with visual impairments.

10. Work collaboratively with general/special education staff and administrators to determine present levels of performance, required accommodations, IEP goals and objectives for students with visual impairments.

11. Assist in administration of adapted standardized tests (STAAR, SAT, ACT, TSI2)

12. Manage student behavior through the use of positive behavior supports and in accordance with the district Student Code of Conduct.

13. Attend and participate in department meetings and serve on staff committees as assigned.

14. Establish and maintain open communication with students, parents, and colleagues.

15. Manage time wisely and efficiently in order to manage job responsibilities as an itinerant teacher.

16. Maintain a positive and professional tone in all forms of communication.

17. Maintains confidentiality of information.

18. Regularly required to drive personal vehicle in the performance of assigned task.

19. Reports to work on time every day.

20. Performs additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• In-depth knowledge of disabilities, especially in visual impairments
• Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
• General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to adjust and be flexible to a multitude of situations
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, teachers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
• Ability to concentrate, interpret policy and procedures, reason, understand verbal instructions, analyze, differentiate, memorize, read, coordinate, compile, compute, instruct, and maintain emotional control
• Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required to walk or run to maintain control of students. The employee is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. This position requires the lifting of students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The individual must pass a pre-employment physical examination to include vision, hearing, alcohol and drug testing.
