General Description

Educating juveniles confined in the Hulse Detention Center for short term periods waiting court action and/or in the FACE-IT Program, our juvenile residential program.

Becoming a Special Education Teacher would allow you to be involved with the students in providing instructional programs that meet the students' individual needs primarily through the use of a digital learning program, act as liaison with school personnel, judicial officers, and other agencies. The teacher is a team leader for students in the classroom and works directly with detention center staff to maintain behavioral control to the students assigned. This position works year-round.

Hours of Work

• Monday through Friday 7am-3:30pm, year-round.

Essential Functions

• Adhere to IEP goals and accommodations as needed for residents.
• Create curriculum and educational activities to supplement computer centered learning program.
• Keep an accurate count of supplies in the classroom.
• Participate in trainings as required including de-escalation and restraint techniques.
• Become acquainted with the characteristics, needs, abilities and problems of the residents through personal interaction.
• Ability to work as a team to create a positive classroom environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Create and sustain a classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Participate in self-initiated professional growth and development activities.
• Stay current with educational applications of technology for instruction.

• Collaboration skills while working in a team environment.
• Strong communication skills.
• Data entry skills.
• Ability to lead projects and activities such as Arts & Crafts, Physical Education etc.
• Ability to follow directions.
• Ability to lead up to 24 residents in programming.
• Working knowledge of adolescent development, behavioral psychology, and modern correctional practices.
• Ability to effectively problem solve.
• Ability to implement techniques learned in training to work in a residential setting.
• Ability to work well with a diverse population of residents and staff

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required

Education

• Bachelors' Degree from a four-year accredited college or university, and one to two years related experience and/or training is preferred.
• A valid Illinois Professional Educator License and a LBS1 endorsement are required.
• Spanish speaking ability is helpful.
