Position Overview
Birch Agency is seeking a dependable and compassionate
School Health Assistant / Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) to support students in a school-based setting in
Smithfield, North Carolina.
This opportunity is well suited for individuals with backgrounds in
medical assisting, health aide work, childcare, or other roles involving basic medical or student care experience who are interested in transitioning into a school environment.
The UAP will provide task-oriented health and personal care support under the direction and supervision of the school's Registered Nurse (RN).
Key Responsibilities
Provide support in the school health room by following established guidelines and protocols when students present with illness or injury.
Notify the School Nurse of student health concerns, incidents, and changes in condition.
Administer ordered medications as directed by the RN and in accordance with local district policies and procedures.
Perform designated health-related procedures, such as feeding, toileting, and basic hygiene, only after receiving the required training and under the direct supervision of the School Nurse.
Assist students with health and personal care needs while maintaining dignity, safety, and confidentiality.
Conduct student health screenings, including vision and hearing screenings, when appropriately trained.
Accurately document health-related activities and report screening results or concerns to the School Nurse for follow-up.
Follow all school, district, and nursing protocols related to student health and safety.
Maintain a professional and supportive environment for students.
Qualifications
Previous experience as a Medical Assistant, Health Aide, Childcare Worker, or in a similar caregiving/healthcare role preferred.
Basic medical or health-related training preferred.
Ability to follow established medical procedures and instructions.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Dependable, patient, and comfortable working with school-aged children.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow student health and safety requirements.
Important Role Requirements
This is a
task-oriented support position under RN supervision.
The UAP will perform assigned duties according to established protocols and training.
Special health procedures may only be performed after the UAP has received specific training and under the direction of the School Nurse.
The UAP is not responsible for training other staff members.
The School Nurse maintains oversight of student health services and provides direction regarding health-related procedures.
