Position Summary:

The Department of Sociology seeks a highly organized and student-centered Teaching Associate to support undergraduate instruction across multiple course sections. This is a nine-month appointment with regular university benefits and the possibility of annual renewal based on enrollment needs and available funding. The Teaching Associate will work closely with faculty to enhance student learning by leading discussion sections, grading coursework, holding office hours, and providing academic support to students. This position is ideal for candidates who are passionate about teaching, mentoring students, and contributing to an engaging learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and prepare up to six discussion sections each semester (approximately 20 students per section).
  • Attend course lectures and collaborate with faculty to ensure discussion sections reinforce key course concepts.
  • Grade quizzes, exams, papers, and other assignments using established grading rubrics.
  • Develop and assess smaller assignments and classroom activities as appropriate.
  • Hold approximately five office hours per week to answer student questions, clarify course material, and support student success.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and fellow teaching associates to coordinate grading standards and discussion section planning.

Required Skills

  • Master''s degree in Sociology or a closely related field. 13 years of relevant teaching, instructional, or academic support experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and instructional staff.

Preferred Experience:

  • Teaching or leading undergraduate discussion or lab sections.
  • Experience grading student writing and providing constructive feedback.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning and inclusive teaching practices.

Reporting Structure:

The Teaching Associate reports to the Chair of the Department and works closely with course instructors and other teaching staff. While the position does not include formal supervisory responsibilities, it provides leadership and guidance through coordination with fellow teaching associates.
