Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as a resource and role model to employees, providing training, orientation, and day-to-day work direction.
  • Assign, monitor, and review work progress and accuracy, ensuring productivity and maintaining appropriate staffing levels.
  • Assist with human resource responsibilities, including interviewing, staff development, and resolution of employee concerns.
  • Interpret and advise staff on department policies and procedures, updating them on procedural changes.
  • Perform all duties of the technical and/or support staff.
  • Ensure the implementation and maintenance of quality, efficiency, and safety in the section, meeting all accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative in tracking and resolving problems, checking the accuracy of processes and test methods.
  • Assign work within the section, assisting in workload evaluations, and ensuring timely completion and reporting of tasks.
  • Participate in writing and reviewing policies and procedures, serving as a staff resource for technical and administrative guidance.
  • Document information for quality assurance and improvement, utilizing laboratory information systems appropriately.
  • Ensure specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing, performing proficiency testing as required.
  • Provide direction and technical assistance to laboratory staff, assisting in the development of education and training protocols.
  • Improve the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures and ensure compliance with accrediting agency standards.
  • Maintain effective communication to enhance department performance and support organizational change efforts.

  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including alternate site assignments.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality both in and out of the workplace.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Frequently lift up to 10 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for the majority of the workday.
  • Potential exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive, and infectious agents.
  • Exposure to human blood and body fluids, requiring appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Operate all necessary equipment to perform job duties.
