Job Description:
  • At Power Plant, a 3x1 Combined Cycle plant, the O&M Technician - Maintenance - Electrical maintains electrical equipment, performs regular preventive maintenance, troubleshoots, operates, tests, supervises outage and plant improvement work, and maintains documentation on all power plant electrical equipment and systems.
  • In so doing, the Electrical O&M Technician keeps power plant electrical equipment in optimum operating condition; provides safety and environmental stewardship in his/her area of expertise; ensures compliance with all applicable Federal and State regulations and plant procedures; and develops and participates in continuous improvement of plant operating and maintenance procedures to ensure optimal, consistent, and safe operation.
  • Cross functional skills should be in the areas of administration, mechanical, power plant operations, and instrumentation and controls.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, installation, and repair of plant electrical equipment. Equipment includes high, medium, and low voltage switchgear, generators, exciters, step-up and step-down transformers, motors, breakers, contactors, MODs, PTs, CTs, cable and conduits, station batteries, UPS systems and other electrical equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting, diagnostics, installation, and repair of plant electrical equipment.
  • Initiates and follows through on electrical projects to improve plant processes and/or safety.
  • Plans and implements the electrical maintenance and preventative maintenance programs and oversees supplementary electrical contractors during outages and provides QA/QC for work of contractors to ensure that Client's standards are met.
  • Documents current, past, and future work and/or improvements.
  • Familiar with safe electrical work practices, including: Lock-out /Tag-out, High Voltage testing, and High Voltage grounding.
  • Provides recommendations for process improvements and is willing to train others in all aspects of the improvements.
  • Cross-trains other O&M Technicians, as assigned, to support plant maintenance needs.
  • Participates in plant-sponsored operator and maintenance training and continuing training.
  • Practices situational leadership, safety, and environmental stewardship.
  • Perform tasks in inclement weather and hazardous environments.
  • Perform 24-7 Call-Duty on a rotational basis to respond to abnormal system conditions.
  • Dependable, reliable and predictable attendance is required.
  • Must possess a valid, in-state motor vehicle operator's license at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Sr. Manager Plant Ops & Maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree from an accredited college, or Journeymen Electrician license or certification in lieu of degree.
  • Progressive work experience as a technician in a related industry such as oil & gas or utilities
  • General working knowledge of electricity, switchgear, protective relays, motors, generators, high voltage transformers feeders, cables, and UPS systems, including a general theoretical understanding.
  • Must be able to properly use meters, meggers, high voltage testers, electrical protective equipment, and similar instruments.
  • Strong ability to read and understand schematics, logic diagrams, electrical circuitry, P&IDs, technical manuals, and instructions and be able to apply this understanding to electrical work.
  • Must be able to work in a high-performance work environment and respond to callouts or overtime with minimal supervision.
  • Strong ability to understand procedures and instructions required for the competent support of power plant operations and maintenance.
  • All employees have the responsibility to the customer and their co-workers to meet the plant's objectives and customer's needs in both an accurate and timely manner.
  • Must have excellent communication and team skills, including a working knowledge of Excel and PC based applications.
  • Must pass Mechanical, Reading and Math Aptitude test to be considered for an interview.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as an Industrial Electrician.
  • Demonstrated experience in a power, steam generation, or other industrial facility is desirable.
  • Combined Cycle power plant experience is preferred.
Working Environment:
  • Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions.
  • "On call" status will periodically be required. All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program.
  • This program includes a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening; and random drug screening during employment. Extensive smoking restrictions exist in and around the facility.
Physical Demands:
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
  • Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
