The Tech Writer III is a senior-level position responsible for leading the development of comprehensive documentation for high-impact aerospace and defense projects. This role involves managing documentation projects, collaborating with subject matter experts, and ensuring that all technical documents meet the highest standards of accuracy and clarity.

The Mission Solutions and Technologies (MST) business area provides affordable, turn-key command/control, communications, integrated ISR, force protection and security solutions worldwide. The MST team has a long legacy of supporting the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, commercial and international customers with years of experience in platform operations, engineering and full lifecycle management across domains - air, land, sea, space and cyber.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of detailed operations and maintenance manuals, supplements, and related documentation for high-impact aerospace and defense systems.

  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts to gather detailed technical information and ensure documentation accuracy.

  • Utilize engineering drawings, block diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models to create comprehensive technical documents.

  • Lead internal and external documentation review meetings, gather feedback, and implement revisions.

  • Ensure all documentation complies with the highest customer requirements, company standards, and industry regulations.

  • Maintain and update documentation as systems and specifications evolve.

  • Support proposal preparation by providing necessary documentation and technical writing expertise.

  • Manage and organize documentation files and records for easy accessibility and version control.

  • Mentor and guide junior and mid-level technical writers, providing technical expertise and support.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance documentation quality and efficiency.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Engineering, Aerospace, Aviation or a related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in technical writing or a related field within the aerospace and defense industry.

  • Higher level relevant degree may substitute for experience.

  • Advanced proficiency with documentation tools and software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe FrameMaker and Extensible Markup Language/Standard Generalized Markup Language (XML/SGML).

  • Advanced knowledge of technical writing principles, practices, and standards.

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary design and development teams.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Advanced degree in Technical Writing, English, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Extensive experience with aerospace and defense terminology and documentation requirements.

  • Strong familiarity with engineering drawings and CAD models.

  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.

  • Experience preparing documentation with minimal input (written or verbal) from subject matter experts.

  • Familiarity working with internal teams to obtain an in-depth understanding of product and documentation requirements. Verify content meets applicable standards and is appropriate for its intended audience.

  • Prior experience creating and maintaining documentation templates, layout guides, and graphics resources.

  • Understanding of internal technical reference documentation, including data libraries, training material, process/procedure guides.

  • Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry or DoD.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods, including proficiency with documentation tools and software.

  • Manual dexterity for operating a computer and creating detailed documentation.

  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally.

  • Must be able to work in an office or hybrid environment.

  • Ability to travel occasionally as required by project needs.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and stakeholders.

  • Ability to adapt to changing project requirements, tools ,and technologies in a fast paced industry.
