The Technical Director Design plays a vital role in bringing artistic visions to life on stage. Serving as both a creative leader and skilled craftsperson, this position guides the scenic design process from concept through completion, ensuring each production is realized with exceptional artistic integrity, technical excellence, and attention to detail. Overseeing the planning, scheduling, and execution of scenic designs, the Technical Director Design helps transform ideas into immersive theatrical environments that inspire performers and audiences alike.
As the primary bridge between the arts divisions and the scene shop, this role fosters collaboration, clear communication, and shared purpose throughout the production process. Working closely with the Technical Director Operations, the Technical Director Design helps align production priorities, coordinate timelines, and contribute directly to the construction and implementation of scenery. Through leadership, craftsmanship, and a passion for storytelling, this position helps create transformative artistic experiences that support the educational and creative mission of Interlochen.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work in collaboration with the Technical Director - Operations to ensure the design and build process is efficiently run and executed at a high level.
Designs at least 4 productions a year
Works with division directors on production schedules and deadlines and runs all production meetings.
Responsible for building alongside the Technical Director - Operations and the carpenter.
Comfortable in a steel workshop.
Helps oversee the maintenance of all shop tools and equipment.
Potential to run crew when needed.
Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances.
Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.
Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.
Performs other duties as assigned.
