Workflow
Start day with team stretches and morning huddles for job/machine assignments.
Setup Machinists: Receive job traveler and setup sheets; read and edit G/M code; tram in vises, load fixtures, dial in tight tolerances (down to 0.01 mm) using bore gauges; prove out first article and hand off to operators.
Operators: Daily machine checks (coolant and oil levels), clock into jobs, load/unload raw stock and parts, deburr, and complete In-Process Inspection (IPI) sheets using calipers and micrometers.

About the Role
AMS seeks a 2nd shift Powder Coating Technician to perform powder coating operations on manufactured components. You will apply powder coatings to parts produced through CNC machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and 3D printing, ensuring high-quality surface finishes that meet customer specifications. This role requires attention to detail, knowledge of coating processes, and the ability to operate coating equipment safely and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Coating Operations
• Apply powder coatings to manufactured components using electrostatic spray guns
• Perform surface preparation including cleaning, degreasing, and media blasting
• Mask parts to protect critical features and threads from coating
• Load and unload parts from coating racks and fixtures
• Operate curing ovens and monitor temperature profiles
• Inspect coated parts for quality defects including orange peel, runs, sags, and thin spots
• Measure coating thickness using thickness gauges
• Perform touch-ups and rework as needed
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
• Operate powder coating equipment including spray booths, electrostatic guns, and curing ovens
• Clean spray guns, booths, and equipment daily
• Monitor and maintain powder levels in hoppers
• Replace filters and perform routine equipment maintenance
• Report equipment issues to Powder Coating Lead
• Ensure proper ventilation and environmental controls
Quality and Inspection
• Verify coating quality meets customer specifications and color standards
• Perform visual inspections for finish consistency and defects
• Conduct color matching against samples and specifications
• Identify and report quality issues to Powder Coating Lead and quality engineers
• Maintain accurate coating records and documentation
• Support first article inspections for new coating specifications
Material Handling and Organization
• Retrieve components from manufacturing departments for coating operations
• Handle parts carefully to prevent damage before and after coating
• Organize coated parts and prepare for downstream operations or shipping
• Maintain organized work area and enforce 5S standards
• Manage powder inventory and notify lead of material needs
• Return unused materials to proper storage locations
Safety and Compliance
• Follow all safety protocols and procedures
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and protective clothing
• Maintain clean and safe work environment
• Handle coating materials and chemicals safely
• Report safety hazards or concerns immediately
• Support ISO 9001 compliance through proper documentation
• Ensure proper waste disposal and environmental compliance
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Coordinate with manufacturing teams on component readiness and coating priorities
• Communicate with Powder Coating Lead on quality issues or process improvements
• Work with quality engineers on coating investigations
• Support shipping team with packaging of coated components
Qualifications
Required
• High school diploma or equivalent
• 1+ years of powder coating experience or equivalent technical training
• Knowledge of powder coating processes and equipment
• Ability to identify coating defects and quality issues
• Proficiency with coating thickness measurement tools
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
• Basic computer skills for documentation
Preferred
• 2+ years of powder coating experience in a manufacturing environment
• Technical certification or vocational training in coating technology
• Experience with electrostatic spray application
• Knowledge of surface preparation techniques including media blasting
• Familiarity with color matching and coating specifications
• Experience with multiple coating types (polyester, epoxy, hybrid)
• Experience in contract manufacturing or high-mix production environments
