We create transformational experiences through innovative and responsive teaching in a diverse community of authentic belonging.Position DescriptionThe Technical Theatre Educator is responsible for leading the scenic and stagecraft components of The St. Paul's Schools' theatre productions in addition to teaching the Upper School Technical Theatre courses. Working collaboratively with the Technical Director and production team, this position oversees scenic design, construction, rigging, shop safety, and student crews while helping students develop strong technical theatre skills through hands-on learning.This position serves as a collaborative member of the production team supporting theatre, dance, music, and school performances while mentoring students through every phase of production from design through strike.Hours of employment vary and regularly including nighttime rehearsals and performances, lasting until late evening during pre-production and performance weeks. In addition, work on some weekends for tech rehearsals for performing arts productions is required.The Technical Theatre Educator will collaborate and work closely with the Technical Director and report to the Upper School Head (as assigned) and the TSPS Arts Department Chair and will work closely with the Director of Arts Operations. While this position is a ten-month position, there may be summer needs based on camp and program performances. If there are summer needs, these will be discussed in advance and supported accordingly with a stipend.Job ResponsibilitiesProduction Responsibilities· Design and oversee construction of scenery and stage properties for theatre and dance productions.· Supervise scenic construction, painting, props, fabrication, and installation.· Oversee safe operation of the scene shop and maintain all shop equipment.· Lead student stage crews during scenery construction, load-in, technical rehearsals, and strike.· Collaborate closely with the Technical Director on production schedules and implementation.· Assist with rigging, stage mechanics, and backstage operations.· Support special events and performances as assigned.Teaching Responsibilities· Teach two Upper School Technical Theatre classes per semester· Develop student skills in scenic construction, woodworking, props construction, scenic painting, stagecraft, shop safety and basic theatrical design.· Continue development of the Technical Theatre curriculum.· Mentor students through project-based learning and production experiences.Program Responsibilities· Recruit and supervise student stage crews.· Maintain inventory of scenery, tools, lumber, hardware, and production materials.· Ensure compliance with all theatre and shop safety standards.· Collaborate with faculty across theatre, dance, and music productions.· Recommend equipment and shop improvements.Key QualificationsRequired· Significant experience in scenic construction and technical theatre production.· Demonstrated expertise in woodworking, scenery fabrication, and stagecraft.· Knowledge of theatrical rigging and safe shop practices.· Experience supervising student crews or production teams.· Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Technical Theatre, Theatre Design, or related field.· Strong organizational and collaborative skills.· Ability to teach technical theatre through hands-on, project-based instruction.Preferred· Scenic design experience.· Experience teaching high school or college technical theatre.· Knowledge of scenic painting and props construction.· Experience working in educational theatre.· Familiarity with modern theatre technologies and production workflows. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's years of experience, education and skills. For this opportunity, our salary range is $55,000 to $75,000 annually. Candidates with additional experience or qualifications may be offered a salary outside of the range shown.
