Technical Writer I

ICON is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Technical Illustrator / Writer to own the creation and maintenance of technical documentation and visual content for the Titan print system and associated hardware. As ICON scales field deployments and grows its service and training programs, this role is critical to ensuring that operators, technicians, and field personnel have clear, accurate, and visually compelling documentation to safely and effectively operate, maintain, and troubleshoot ICON''s technology. You will translate complex mechanical, electrical, and software systems into accessible written procedures, illustrated work instructions, training materials, and service manuals - working closely with Engineering, Field Operations, and Training to keep documentation current as the product evolves. This position is based at ICON''s Austin, TX campus and reports to the Manager, Manufacturing Engineering.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Create, maintain, and continuously improve technical documentation for the Titan print system, including operator manuals, maintenance procedures, service guides, troubleshooting references, and illustrated parts catalogs.
• Develop high-quality technical illustrations, exploded-view diagrams, assembly drawings, and annotated schematics to support written procedures and training content.
• Translate engineering drawings, CAD models, and subject matter expert input into clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate documentation for field technicians, operators, and service personnel.
• Partner with Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineering teams to review and validate technical content for accuracy; incorporate design changes and product updates into documentation in a timely manner.
• Develop and maintain a documentation library with version control, ensuring field teams always have access to current and approved materials.
• Collaborate with the Training team to develop instructional content, visual aids, and job aids that support operator certification and technician training programs.
• Support the change control process by flagging documentation impacts of ECOs and updating affected procedures and illustrations upon change approval.
• Establish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and illustration conventions to ensure consistency across all technical content.
• Solicit feedback from field technicians and operators to identify documentation gaps, inaccuracies, or usability issues; iterate to improve clarity and effectiveness.
• Manage documentation in ICON''s content management or PLM system, maintaining accurate revision histories and release records.
• Support regulatory or customer documentation requirements as needed, including safety labeling, compliance documentation, and equipment specifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• 5+ years of experience in technical writing, technical illustration, or a combined role in a hardware or manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to produce professional technical illustrations, including exploded views, assembly diagrams, and annotated schematics, using industry-standard tools.
• Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, or equivalent technical illustration and desktop publishing software.
• Experience working from CAD models, engineering drawings, and subject matter expert input to produce accurate documentation.
• Strong writing skills with the ability to produce clear, concise, and well-structured procedural content for technical audiences.
• Familiarity with document version control and structured documentation management practices.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative environment where products evolve rapidly and documentation must keep pace.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor''s degree in Technical Communication, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks, Creo, or similar CAD platforms for extracting geometry and views for illustration purposes.
• Experience with 3D illustration tools such as KeyShot, CATIA Composer, or similar rendering and visualization software.
• Background in construction technology, robotics, heavy equipment, or industrial automation documentation.
• Familiarity with structured authoring standards such as S1000D, ATA iSpec 2200, or DITA.
• Experience developing content for digital delivery platforms, including web-based documentation portals or mobile field applications.
• Knowledge of OSHA safety documentation requirements or equipment hazard communication standards.
