Tecknomic is looking for a Technical Writer Journeyman. 

FULLY ONSITE IN WASHINGTON, DC. 

 

About the Role

The DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) is seeking a detail-oriented Technical Writer to develop, edit, and maintain clear, accurate agency documentation and public-facing content. This role will support website content, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), guidance documents, newsletters, reports, and other internal and external communications while working closely with subject matter experts and program staff. The ideal candidate brings strong technical writing, editing, and proofreading skills, experience managing SOPs and web content, and the ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible language. This is a full-time, on-site contract position with potential for extension.

Job Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Review, edit, and update agency website content for accuracy, consistency, accessibility, and branding alignment
  • Draft, revise, and maintain website text, announcements, newsletters, guidance documents, and other communications
  • Edit and proofread written materials for grammar, punctuation, clarity, tone, and formatting
  • Review, update, and standardize Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and operational documentation
  • Format documents, reports, manuals, presentations, and correspondence for internal and external distribution
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and program staff to translate complex information into clear, audience-appropriate content
  • Ensure documents comply with agency style guides, document control procedures, and applicable policies 
  • Maintain document version control and support the organization of agency documentation
  • Recommend improvements to documentation processes, templates, and writing standards

Qualifications

What You Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, or a related field (relevant experience may substitute)
  • 1–6 years of professional experience in technical writing, editing, communications, or document management
  • Experience editing website content and technical/administrative documentation
  • Experience developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Excellent written, verbal, editing, and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills


Preferred

  • Experience working in a government or public sector environment
  • Knowledge of plain language principles and web accessibility standards
  • Familiarity with document management systems and agency records management practices
  • Experience using content management systems (CMS) for website updates
