Overview:
Clinical laboratory scientists perform complex laboratory tests on blood, bodily fluids and tissue samples to help diagnose and treat diseases.
Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures
Responsibilities:
- Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
- Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
- Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
- Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
- Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
- Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
- Performs phlebotomy venipunctures, finger sticks, heel sticks) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
- When requested, performs duties required for relief in higher classification in supervisor’s absence.
- Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.
- Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and interdepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Maintains work area—cleans bench, restocks supplies, notifies supervisor of low stock.
- Assists and trains with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees.
- Responsible for running CAP survey materials
- Perform ;laboratory instrument maintenance assigned by the director
- Work with peers in harmony and help with other responsibilities in the laboratory. Contributes with the Policy and procedures review.
- Participate with laboratory survey inspection.
- Performs task assigned by the supervisors or director.
- Help Laboratory Assistant in processing blood if needed.
- Participate with Laboratory Inspections and laboratory material survey required by CMS.
Qualifications:
B.S. or B.A in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Minimum 3-5 years experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a licensed and accredited Acute Care Facility preferred.
Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license from the State of California Department of Health Services.
Performs laboratory test procedures in one or more sections of the Clinical
Laboratory, using good judgment and independent actions. Have good communication skills and the ability to effectively provide customer service to all customers. Extended duty and on-call may be required as needed.
