About the Role
The Technician I, Garage Days Alignments position is responsible for performing front-wheel alignments, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and overhauls on RTS buses and fleet vehicles. This role ensures vehicles remain safe, reliable, and available for daily service while supporting overall fleet maintenance operations.
What You'll Do
- Perform front-wheel alignments to maximize tire life on articulated buses, 40-foot buses, and non-revenue vehicles.
- Maintain, repair, and overhaul RTS buses and fleet vehicles.
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance.
- Replace, adjust, and repair mechanical components.
- Complete required test drives following repairs.
- Operate diagnostic software and equipment, including Cummins InSite and Allison diagnostic systems.
- Perform welding, brazing, and cutting torch work as required.
- Operate tow trucks and respond to road calls when assigned.
- Perform articulated bus repairs and overhauls.
- Complete ramp and battery preventive maintenance inspections and repairs.
- Report safety concerns, equipment defects, and maintenance issues to supervisors.
- Maintain accurate maintenance documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Two (2) years in an accredited diesel mechanics program or comparable technical coursework;
OR
- Equivalent verifiable work experience (two years of work experience may substitute for one year of education).
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Must provide own tools.
- Must obtain a New York State CDL Class B permit with passenger and air brake endorsements prior to employment.
- Must obtain a CDL Class B license within 90 days of hire.
- Must obtain a CDL Class A permit with towing endorsement (may be obtained after hire).
- Must obtain a CDL Class A license within 90 days of receiving the permit.
- Must successfully complete a post-offer physical examination.
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English for safety, communication, and use of technical manuals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing heavy-duty vehicle alignments.
- Experience maintaining transit buses or commercial diesel vehicles.
- Experience using electronic diagnostic systems.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of diesel engine repair and preventive maintenance practices.
- Ability to perform accurate front-wheel alignments.
- Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to diagnose and repair vehicle systems using computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to safely operate shop equipment and towing vehicles.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.

- Work environment includes moderate to loud noise levels.
