We have an exciting opportunity for a Technician to join our High Voltage Systems team. This person will play an integral part in maintaining complex systems at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in La Jolla, CA. The DIII-D Tokamak experiment is the largest operating fusion device in the U.S. Our team is leading cutting edge technology in support of this important DOE funded research program. This group is responsible for the operations and maintenance of several very high voltage (>1OOkV) and medium voltage (12.47kV, 48OV) power systems.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


+ Perform standard mechanical or electrical technician duties, including operation, repair and maintenance of high voltage power supplies and the control hardware used at 011I-D.

+ Support testing, calibration, documentation, and data collection as well as diagnosis of equipment problems. Provide feedback to engineering staff for improvements to procedures and documents.

+ Use schematics to methodically and efficiently perform real-time troubleshooting of electronics.

+ Provides technician support to other DIII-D systems, such as the RF and neutral beams groups.

+ Identifies operation or equipment problems and reports deficiencies.

+ Maintains and repairs laboratory and experimental equipment.

+ Soldering and fabricating electronic assemblies as required.

+ Responsible to learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.

+ Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:


+ Typically requires associate's degree or equivalent with five or more years of experience.

+ Familiarity with basic electronic equipment, meters and oscilloscopes, the ability to work with mechanical systems and common hand tools, and operate laboratory equipment.

+ Understanding of schematic diagrams and basic troubleshooting methods.

+ Ability to use basic office computer applications and graphical user interface applications.

+ Good manual dexterity working with precision assembly of fairly small parts is desirable.

+ Hours must be somewhat flexible and may include evening shifts.

+ This position involves the installation and occasional relocation of equipment. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.

+ Ability and willingness to work around unusual conditions, such as high voltage, cryogens, and confined spaces.

+ Must be team oriented, willing to assist others to reach our operational goals.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:


+ Experience with High Voltage DC power systems and techniques.

+ Power electronics experience.

+ Experience with machine shop tools (drill presses, saws, mills, lathes, etc.) is a plus.

+ Experience working in groups or teams.
