Job Title: Junior Telecommunications Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on supporting the design, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of critical telecommunications and IP network infrastructure within a utility environment. The Junior Telecommunications Engineer will apply a strong engineering foundation and hands-on router experience to ensure reliable communication systems that support operational technology and enterprise networks, while learning from senior engineers and growing into a specialized telecommunications utility role.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues involving telecommunications networks and IP routing infrastructure.
  • Investigate and debug network performance issues, outages, and connectivity problems in both enterprise and operational technology environments.
  • Configure, support, and maintain routers, switches, and associated network equipment to ensure stable and secure network operations.
  • Assist with network design, implementation, upgrades, and maintenance projects, contributing to continuous improvement of telecommunications systems.
  • Analyze network performance data to identify opportunities for optimization, increased reliability, and improved service quality.
  • Work closely with senior engineers to support telecommunications systems that are critical to utility operations and grid reliability.
  • Create and maintain clear and accurate network documentation, including diagrams, configuration records, and technical procedures.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and validation of network equipment and communication systems before deployment into production environments.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering, operations, and field teams to investigate and resolve technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Participate in on-call support or outage response activities as required to help restore service and minimize downtime.

Essential Skills

  • Strong engineering foundation in telecommunications, electrical, or related disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience with router troubleshooting, debugging, and basic configuration.
  • Practical understanding of IP routing infrastructure and telecommunications networks.
  • Ability to configure, support, and maintain routers, switches, and related network equipment.
  • Skill in analyzing network performance and identifying issues affecting reliability and connectivity.
  • Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and procedures with attention to detail.
  • Effective collaboration skills for working with senior engineers, operations staff, and field teams.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call support or outage response activities as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with electrical or substation telecommunications systems.
  • Background in telecom engineering within a utility or industrial environment.
  • Experience configuring Nokia Service Routers is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with enterprise and operational technology network environments.
  • Interest in developing a long-term career in utility telecommunications and network engineering.

Work Environment

The role is based in a utility telecommunications environment that supports both enterprise and operational technology networks, including electrical and substation facilities. You will work with routers, switches, and other communication equipment in office and technical settings, collaborating closely with engineering, operations, and field teams. The position may involve participation in outage response and on-call support, requiring flexibility during critical events. Work is primarily performed in a professional office and lab environment, with occasional visits to operational or field locations where standard safety practices and appropriate attire are expected.

This is a Contract position based out of Tucson, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $35.00/hr.
