Telecommunications Infrastructure Technician - IT/Network Closet Survey & Installation

As a Telecommunications Infrastructure Technician - IT/Network Closet Survey & Installation, you are responsible for performing detailed field surveys of IT/network closets and supporting installation of similar network, cabling, rack, power-support, and grounding/bonding infrastructure in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, standards, and customer requirements. In addition, you will: 

• Perform physical surveys of IT/network closets, telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, racks, cabinets, pathways, and associated infrastructure; accurately record as-found conditions. 

• Document network equipment locations and physical connectivity, including device hostname, rack designator, uplink port, uplink neighbor, patch path, media type, connector type, and installed endpoint/drop counts. 

• Create and update field documentation including rack elevations, floor-plan markups, photographs, cable/pathway records, equipment inventories, test records, and survey workbooks. 

• Inventory existing communications and network assets and record make, model, part number, serial number, software/firmware version, site/building, IT/network closet, rack/cabinet location, and condition as required by the customer. 

• Perform fiber optic inspection and testing, including bidirectional OTDR testing and identification of spare fiber strands, and maintain accurate native test results and trace files. 

• Inspect and document copper and fiber cabling, patch panels, terminations, pathways, labels, grounding/bonding, rack space, cable management, and general installation condition. 

• Document existing power-support infrastructure serving network equipment, including receptacles, PDUs, UPS systems, circuit identification, backup power sources, and available rack space; coordinate panel access or energized electrical testing with qualified electrical personnel. 

• Perform approved non-intrusive grounding and bonding measurements using calibrated test equipment when trained and authorized; maintain current calibration records for survey instruments. 

• Identify reusable, replaceable, and new-install requirements for telecommunications racks, cabling, pathways, patching, UPS/PDU equipment, grounding/bonding, and related infrastructure based on field conditions and customer criteria. 

• Read and interpret floor plans, rack elevations, cable schedules, installation drawings, bills of material (BOM), method-of-procedure documentation, and customer installation specifications. 

• Assemble, modify, and install telecommunications racks and cabinets, ladder rack/cable tray, patch panels, fiber and copper cabling, cable management, network equipment, UPS/PDU components, and grounding/bonding conductors within the technician’s qualifications and approved scope. 

• Route, terminate, label, dress, test, and document copper and fiber cabling in accordance with approved standards and customer requirements; support equipment turn-up, cutover, and commissioning activities as directed. 

• Use hand tools, power tools, fiber test equipment, copper test equipment, labeling tools, laptops/tablets, and other survey and installation tools safely and correctly. 

• Perform self-quality checks of survey data and installed work before submission or sign-off; immediately identify discrepancies, access issues, safety concerns, damaged infrastructure, or conditions outside the approved scope. 

• Inventory, transport, protect, and account for tools, test equipment, materials, and customer data while working at commercial, enterprise, government, campus, data center, industrial, and other secure customer locations. 

• Follow all site safety, security, access, CUI/data-handling, lockout/tagout, fall-protection, ladder/lift, and customer-specific requirements applicable to the assigned work. 

• Establish and maintain a professional rapport with customers, supervisors, engineers, electricians, and co-workers, and provide clear daily status and field documentation. 

About You: 

• Safety is a part of your day-to-day, and you have a track record of completing work with a high level of quality. 

• You have a hands-on approach to troubleshooting and can work independently from survey checklists, drawings, standards, and written instructions. 

• High School diploma or GED; electronics, telecommunications, networking, or technical trade school training is preferred. 

• You have 3 or more years of experience with telecommunications, network infrastructure, IT/network closets, data centers, structured cabling, central office, or similar installation and field-survey work. 

• You have practical experience with fiber optic cabling and test equipment; experience performing and interpreting OTDR tests is strongly preferred. 

• You are familiar with telecommunications racks/cabinets, copper and fiber patching, cable pathways, labeling, grounding/bonding, UPS/PDU equipment, and common network hardware. 

• You can read floor plans, rack elevations, cable schedules, one-line diagrams, installation notes, and equipment documentation and translate field conditions into accurate records. 

• You have the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel and work within company- or customer-provided databases, survey forms, mobile applications, and file repositories. 

• You can maintain accurate equipment serial-number records, photographs, test files, and other field data with strong attention to detail. 

• You possess excellent communication, time-management, and organizational skills and can coordinate effectively with technical leads and customer representatives. 

• You are dependable; you follow instructions, respond to management direction, and keep commitments. 

• You have experience safely using hand and power tools and can lift tools and equipment as needed (minimum 10 lbs; team lifting or mechanical assistance used where required). 

• You must be willing and available to travel away from home for several weeks at a time (up to 75%) and work at commercial, enterprise, government, campus, data center, industrial, and other secure customer sites. 

• You must be able to satisfy customer background screening, identification, safety, security, and site-access requirements applicable to the assigned project. 

• BICSI, ETA/FOA fiber, OSHA, manufacturer cabling, lift, first-aid/CPR, or other relevant technical/safety certifications are preferred but not required unless specified by the project. 

Compensation of $29-$35 per hour, depending on experience
