Job Description: Telecommunications Technician

Position Overview

The Telecommunications Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing voice, data, and video communication systems. This role ensures the optimal performance of telecommunication networks and equipment, and provides technical support to end-users and clients as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Install, route, label, dress, and terminate Category 5/6 plenum-rated cabling and OS2 single-mode fiber optic backbone.
• Assemble and install telecommunications infrastructure including equipment racks (2-post and 4-post), cable management systems, ladder racks, fiber drawers, patch panels, and grounding systems.
• Mount and connect wireless access points (indoor and outdoor), ensuring accurate documentation of device data including serial numbers and physical placement.
• Perform testing, labeling, and documentation of all installed systems in compliance with Joint Center Deployment Capability (JCDC) standards.
• Accurately track and record daily labor hours in compliance with SCA-certified payroll and reporting requirements.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Stay updated on latest telecommunications technologies and best practices.

Required Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrated experience in low-voltage or telecommunications infrastructure installation, including work in commercial or federal environments preferred.

• Strong knowledge of structured cabling standards, installation methods, and industry best practices, with hands-on experience using telecom tools, testing equipment, and certification devices.

• Ability to read and interpret ICT blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and structured cabling designs with a high level of accuracy.

• Familiarity with telecommunications equipment and materials from manufacturers such as Tripplite, Siemens, Panduit, and CommScope.

• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, particularly in labeling, documentation, and compliance tracking.

• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills related to installation and connectivity issues in the field.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, with effective time management skills to meet project deadlines.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills for coordination with team members and project stakeholders.

• Ability to meet site access and security clearance requirements for federal facilities, as applicable.

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree or technical certificate in telecommunications, electrical, information technology, or a related field preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and related experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to climb ladders and work from lifts, ladders, or other elevated access points as needed.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to use hands and fingers for cable installation, termination, testing, labeling, and tool operation.
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, including confined or elevated spaces when required.
• Good visual acuity for reading labels, diagrams, schematics, and test results.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of a fast-paced construction or installation project.
