JOB SUMMARY

Serves as lead Water Safety Instructor for Anne Arundel County's 5th grade water safety program, Water Ready with Drownproofing. Duties include the "in the water" instruction established by the curriculum, the supervision of the students at all time while the students are in the pool area, completion of individual Skill Achievement Reports, the care and maintenance of materials of instruction, and assisting the Teacher Specialist during parent training. Work is planned and implemented under the direction of the Coordinator of Outdoor Education and the professional staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as lead water safety instructor in the implementation of skill development as outlined in the Teacher Handbook to Drown-proofing Program.
  • Completes student skill testing and evaluation form for each student in his/her class or group.
  • Maintains the pool and in some cases the operation of the pool as per regulations established by Anne Arundel County Health Department, Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center and/or pool to which assigned.
  • Works cooperatively with all school personnel and parents involved in the Drown-proofing Program.
  • Assists in training of parents and volunteers.
  • Assists in the supervision of volunteer staff.
  • Attends staff in-services and meetings as scheduled.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate preferred.

Experience

  • One (1) year aquatic teaching experience required;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.

  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with school system administrators, parents, and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications

Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Upon hire, Lifeguard Certification issued by American Red Cross licensed training provider required.
  • Upon hire, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate issued by American Red Cross licensed training provider preferred;
  • Hold or be eligible for Pool Operator License issued by Anne Arundel County Department of Health preferred.
