Under the direction
of the Laboratory Medical Director, Laboratory Administrative Director, and
Supervisor of Specimen Procurement and Dispatch Services, primary duties
include Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing, and Customer Service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS (Including but not limited to):
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to determine
phlebotomy technique appropriate for the age and condition of the patient, and to perform blood collection using the following methods: Venipuncture, Skin Puncture, Arterial Puncture. - Follows the patient identification
procedure. - Performs phlebotomy on patients from
all locations i.e. inpatient, outpatient, and pre-op. - Follows the scripted dialogue using the key words at the key times .
- Travels to health care agencies within the county and to private
homes to perform phlebotomy. Must have reliable transportation when collecting from off-site locations. - Schedules an efficient itinerary considering the
needs of the patient and in cooperation with the supervisors. - Receives specimens from various areas of the hospital, clinic, and
outside providers into specimen receiving area, verifying proper specimen requirements and labeling. - Performs duties involved with registering clinical specimens and ordering tests using the different computer systems.
- Delivers processed specimens to appropriate areas of the laboratory
for testing. - Prepares specimens that are
shipped to reference laboratories. - Provides customer service
support for questions related to specimen requirements, test order entry, results, etc. to all customers in a professional manner. - Uses proper requisitioning procedures to various health
care agencies and ensures that the necessary materials for requisitioning are available. - Assists in orienting new
staff and student interns. - Actively participates in in-service and continuing education programs to broaden
general working knowledge. - Participates on teams and
special projects when asked. - Upholds the Cheshire
Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene Standards of Performance - May be required to assume
responsibilities of a lesser, equal or greater level
